You've Gotta Have an Opening Review....,
By
This review is from: First Seventy Years (Audio CD)
Ray Jessel's music is melodic, enrapturing...and singularly hilarious! This CD was recorded live at one of his most brilliant performances, capturing him at his witty and lovable zenith. His songs, some of which are written with his wife, are latter-day Noel Coward in quality; in fact, he does a pretty good Coward style-parody on here that I never get tired of listening to. The comedy songs on this disc are complemented by a few sentimental/romantic tunes, striking a reasonable balance that makes for a highly enjoyable recording overall. If this is as close as you can get to seeing Jessel perform live, you need to hear this CD as it's a terrific souvenir of his cabaret act. But I also recommend catching him live at one of his all-too-infrequent Los Angeles-area appearances, tickling the ivories at Fields Piano.
