Book Description

October 2006
Explore the life of a great spiritual leader--and walk the peaceful path toward God-realization.

Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, was born during a period of political and religious turmoil in India in the fifteenth century. Tension between Hindus and Muslims had escalated, leading to greater polarization of the two religions. By establishing Sikhism, Nanak created a synthesis of Hinduism and Islam with the belief that God is One. He advocated a casteless society based on truth, unity, and equality.

During his twenty-three years of traveling he taught not only in India but also in Tibet, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and in the area of the present-day countries of Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran, preaching the truth as he perceived it and showing humankind the path to salvation.

Highlighting his quest for tolerance and compassion, this fascinating biography tells the story of a unique spiritual leader who showed a gentle, peaceful path to realizing God. Admired, loved and respected even in his lifetime, Guru Nanak continues to command admiration and respect five hundred years after he lived, with his lasting universal message of Absolute Unity more urgent and necessary than ever before.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Sensibly guides the reader through the tumultuous times and milieu that witnessed the advent of Guru Nanak.... The conversational style ... lends the book a special flavor." -- Saran Singh, editor, Sikh Review

"[Presents] the life and teachings of Guru Nanak, `one of the greatest divine teachers of all times.'... The story of Nanak's life is not the biography of a saint, it is the spiritual journey that offers revelations of things that are within and beyond the terrestrial life and reading once is not enough." -- Hindustan Times

From the Inside Flap

An insightful portrait of a spiritual leader who challenged seekers to transcend the limits of religion by living a life rich with truth, righteousness, knowledge and grace.

This remarkable biography probes the mystery of Guru Nanak's fascinating life of tolerance and service by closely examining his role as:

Historical figure--A humble "prophet of the people," his role in the social order and religious reform of his time continues to have lasting influence in India, Asia and the history of humanity.
Prolific writer--His hymns and philosophical poems--equally lyrical and literary--form the basis of all Sikh spiritual and religious practices.
Wisdom teacher--Refusing to be identified with any one religion, his prescription for ethical living and belief in one God as the salve for religious conflict and social turmoil inspired followers from diverse faiths, nationalities and social backgrounds--and continues today.

Very, very good. If you have never read about the life of Nanak and the beginnings of Sikhism, pick this up. This man broke all the rules of the time and sought out his own path to God. I understand a lot of Nanak biographies include lots of miracles. All I know of Nanak I got from this book right here. Anyone who is looking at religions and wants to understand more about being a Sikh should read this. Live right, seek God, sing to Him, and keep your head covered! I loan this out a lot and everyone basically says "Wow!" when they return it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Glorious Retelling!, August 27, 2011
By
Booktrotter (Northern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The First Sikh Spiritual Master: Timeless Wisdom from the Life and Teachings of Guru Nanak (Paperback)
The time during which Guru Nanak came to prominance was one of political corruption and religious opression. He was born into a rich and prominant family, married and met his responsibilities as a son, brother, husband, father, and ethetic. However, his desire to end the sufferings of his countrymen led him on a lifelong journey to seek knowledge, discover Truth, and spread the Word.... His story, as told here by Harish Dhillon, is presented with eloquence and forsight. Dhillon's writing prowess sets the stage for a movement that changed a nation.
