This review is from: First S'lihot: Midnight Service (Milken Archive of American Jewish Music) (Audio CD)
Cantor Miller and the wonderful choir (including a superb alto soloist) have placed on this compact disc the entire service for the First S'lichos according to the Ashkenazic Orthodox tradition. It is, at once, beautiful, powerful and profoundly moving. It is a treasure for the generations, since Orthodoxy has mostly eliminated the Cantor and choir from its service for the past fifty years. This is the type of service that generations of Jews from at least the nineteenth century until the 1960s would have heard, appreciated and demanded. Sadly, the current generations have opted for quickness and folk-rock, jazz inflected melodies of the youth camp to accompany these prayers. The approach of the current age is retrograde, and does not fit the sentiment or mood of the prayers. Perhaps hearing this compact disc will prompt a re-thinking on the part of congregational rabbis (who, all too often are products of youth camps) to restore the awe-inspiring, spiritually uplifting, traditional music of the synagogue as Rabbi Jacob Mollin inaugurated in the fourteenth century. Thanks to Milken Archives for producing it in conjunction with Naxos.
