This beautiful story, illustrated with glorious and vibrant photographs, is full of wonder for both children and adults. Here is the story of the creatures of the forest preparing for the first snow. In their rituals of preparation for the winter to come, we are given gentle, reflective prose and rich, fascinating photographs: an owl silhouetted againt the mysterious northern lights, dragonflies, hummingbirds, woodchucks, and the most graceful deer. Through this book, children can learn the wonder of the animals of the woods, and also of the changing of the seasons; adult can find lovely and poignant photographic images that bring the magic of the forest alive.

One of their Best. The photo's are fantastic. So many wonderful pictures of animals, insects and seasons leading up to winter. Each picture is a story in itself. It is a joy to read.

The story is simple; it's change of season time. The real photographs are beautiful to behold. These make the books enjoyable both to reader and listener. If you are a nature lover and hope to pass that trait on, this is an easy book to do just that. Told from the viewpoint of the deer and fawn, many animals are included. Note it is not a "board book" to turn loose with younger toddlers. Your eyes and reading will show them the beauty of nature in quite a few pages and words. When trustworthy with real pages, a child can learn to tell the story by looking at the pictures.
It does not fall into the category of "easy reader books" for those just learning to read. It is a lovely book to be shared.

This book is great. I have given it as a gift previously & it was a hit, so I bought it for another child (& his parents) to enjoy. The photos are mesmerizing & it is enjoyed by pretty much all ages. It makes a special read during the 'snow season' up north where we live.

This is a beautifully photographed book with a very cute story. Great for children and adults alike. Though I have no children, I loved the photographs and the story so much that I just had to have the book. I enjoy paging through this when I can't be out hiking or enjoying the outside or when I've had a rough day and need to enjoy the simple moments in life.

We have all these books from this author. The pictures in these books are wonderful. Our three kids love these books, my husband is a hunter and an outdoorsman so the pictures are great. And also the pictures are from Michigan where were from. I would recommend this book along with the other books in this series. Also the DVD's that go along with these books are good too. Great for people who love animals and the outdoors.

I have always loved snow, the smell of it, the quiet, the way it changes light and sound. I loved snow as a baby, and grew up to snowshoe, ski, learn avalanche rescue & survival skills, build snow-trenches and igloos... So I bought this for a coworker's baby, born in winter, and she loves it. Young children are beginning a miraculous journey of discovering the world; this gentle book will help introduce them to this wondrous time of year. Enjoy!

This is described as a "Photographic Fantasy." The story is about various woodland critters preparing for the first storm of winter. The story is told with personalities and verbiage attached to the animals (the fawn wondering why his coat is growing, the owl warning the animals of the approaching storm, etc.) but all of the pictures are photographs, hence, photographic fantasy! :)

The photos really won me over! They are simply beautiful and enchanting! I felt sometimes the text of the story was edited to fit the pictures, instead of the other way around, but overall the text was enjoyable, if nothing outstanding.

Overall, well worth a look! Especially because that little fawn is so adorable!
