5.0 out of 5 stars The best Bible for toddler
I searched a while before purchasing a Bible for my 2 year old son. He loved this one from the beginning. It is his favorite book right now. I liked it because of the 10 word per page limit. The characters are big, expressive and colorful. The essence of the story is captured in a way a toddler can relate. Hands down, it's the best way to introduce Bible characters to...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended
AGE: 2-6

FORMAT: Short, first-person stories with lots of illustrations per story.

FAITHFULNESS: Heavy revision and expurgation of Biblical texts to remove anything remotely unpleasant. Only vaguely accurate with large amounts of rather idiosyncratic interpretations.

ILLUSTRATIONS: Bright but bland illustrations. Substandard...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for preschool and for early readers, October 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The First Step Bible (Hardcover)
My daughters both loved this book when they were three, but even more at five when they could read it to me. Written so they can memorize many stories while getting the basic stories of the bible across. Fantastic introductory book. Give it to your god children!

5.0 out of 5 stars The absolute best preschool Bible I have ever seen., March 7, 1999
By A Customer
After spending many hours researching my toddler's first bible, I found this. It is written at a level to not only be understood by the youngest verbal child, but enjoyed. It captures and keeps a very young child's attention. It was immediately my son's favorite book, and stayed that way until around his fifth birthday!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Please read the Bible to me!", September 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The First Step Bible (Hardcover)
My three year old son asks to have this book read to him over and over again. He enjoys the simple "page turning" suspense in the stories. He will even sit still for the ENTIRE book (a major feat). This Bible will give young preschoolers & toddlers a basic understanding of Bible stories and get them familiar with its major characters.

My daugher is three and we've been through several devotional books, but this is our favorite by far. The illustrations are great. The stories are simple, interesting, and have several pages devoted to each story. I'm buying in for my two-year-old niece and I think she'll like it as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to God's Word!, March 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The First Step Bible (Hardcover)

The words, "Come inside and meet my friends" peek through a hole in the front cover of this colorful, inviting Bible made for toddlers. Delightfully illustrated, characters introduce themselves and tell their stories; everyone from Adam to Jesus!

Parents and children alike will enjoy reading The First Step Bible at bedtime or quiet moments during the day. Created especially for children, ages 1 to 3, this chunky Bible is a wonderful introduction to God's Word.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Toddler Bible, November 19, 2004
This review is from: First Step Bible, The (Hardcover)
We have owned three copies of this bible. The last is falling apart from daily use. All four of our kids love it. The 11 and 9 year olds still love to listen when we read to the 5 and 3 year olds. It is fabulous at teaching truths and showing kids how much God loves them. For two of our kids it has been instrumental in helping them understand who Jesus is and what he did. I have yet to find a better bible for kids under 5, and we have tried plenty.

We have given this to other families and gotten the same feedback. Unfortunately it is now out of print and I am resorting to buying up as many decent used copies as I can find. I plan to stock pile them for when we have grand kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good stories make good listeners . . ., December 10, 2001

On our daughter's baptism four years ago, we gave her this wonderful book which she still often chooses for her night-time story, even though she is a big girl now. The editors have presented biblical stories that are of most interest to the youngest children. The illustrations are charmingly simple and include details that a child will enjoy picking out. The text is brilliantly cast in the first person ("Hi. I'm Noah. God told me to build a big boat . . .) so that the book "speaks" to your child in a personal way. It is successfully designed to appeal to a child's native interest in a good story as a "first step" into the Bible. Because it is so engaging, this bible comes off the shelf often as a well-loved storybook.

I reviewed a lot of bibles before selecting this one and have bought it many times for other children. My daughter is now familiar with the major figures of the bible and has heard many positive messages through our reading and rereading of this book. Because the stories are short and sweet, we can easily stretch or shrink the bedtime reading to suit our needs. Most importantly, our child has been given a way to talk about religion and morality--a dialogue, I think, many parents have trouble knowing just how to start.

Incidentally, because the book is aimed at the 3-and-under set, you won't have to worry about the crucifixion--it gets glossed over in a clever way. Likewise, Lazarus isn't "dead," but in a "dark place" when Jesus calls him out. We get the message without confronting death head on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands Down the BEST PRE-SCHOOLER Bible!!!!, March 5, 2011
By
S Fitzpatrick (Raleigh, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: First Step Bible, The (Hardcover)
This is hands down the best children's Bible because of not only the simple repetitive text that engages very young children, but because of the whimsical child-friendly illustrations. My 4 sons loved this Bible and wore out 3 copies of it. Now I'm finding that my daughter (2) is delighting in it equally as well. This is a STARTER Bible -- and does an excellent job getting kids excited about the Bible. Too many Bible storybooks for children are like giving the kids their vegetables. We know it's good for them, and we forsefeed it to them, but they'd really prefer something else. This book IS the thing they want to turn to - like Bible candy to start them on a life-long love of the scripture. Most of all, it leads them to ask, "So what else happened? Why did Jesus get put into a dark dark place? What happened to Jesus?". At this point, the child is now ready for other more in depth Bible story books. No, we don't shy away from Jesus' death on the cross, but there is room for this type of book on a child's shelf if you want that child to say, "Read it to me again!! Read me MORE Bible stories!!"
