Book Description

October 1, 2001 0765703203 978-0765703200
This clear and practical guide to clinical work, written for the psychotherapist in the first few years of practice, discusses what is involved in psychodynamically oriented psychotherapy. The first section provides a framework to assist with developing and using professional self-understanding in clinical practice. The book offers sound advice about the methods of dynamic therapy, and also suggests how therapists can increase their effectiveness by remaining in supervision and collaborating with other therapists. Ott addresses what it means personally and professionally to be a therapist and as well as how therapists can enhance their clinical skills.
In the second section, the therapist will find hands-on presentations of early treatment issues, from making initial phone contact, consulting and assessing clients, to more difficult situations involving, for example, the suicidal client. Ott details how the new therapist is to assess this difficult the situation, and offers specific interventions and help with the often confusing documentation. All of the interventions are firmly anchored in a psychodynamic understanding of clinical issues.
Maxa Ott has written a book that will guide new therapists entering their first practice. Vivid clinical examples illustrate psychodynamic concepts, and multiple scenarios provide the beginner with words to use in their own cases. A valuable list of referral sources will help beginners learn about the business side of being a therapist. The book concludes with an excellent compilation of sources that will interest the new therapist, such as confidentiality, countertransference, psychopharmacology, and substance abuse. This is a survival manual for the world of clinical practice, complete with practical tips and helpful suggestions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The beginning psychotherapist, regardless of discipline, will find this eminently clear and readable primer an invaluable source of wisdom and support in the process of getting started in this difficult field. The author's presence as mentor is strongly palpable. She describes with sparkling clarity the main 'how-to's' governing setting of the frame, fees, addressing clients' seductiveness, cancellations, hospitalization, and many more. This book is practical in the extreme. The reader will use it as a reference repeatedly as difficult situations are encountered. (Bernard Brickman, M.D., Ph.D. )

Maxa Ott's book is a one-of-a-kind, sorely needed, comprehensive introduction to the many complicated and difficult facets of being a psychotherapist. Everything is spelled out and defined with numerous clarifying examples. First Steps in the Clinical Practice of Psychotherapy should be required reading in every graduate school and training program where, all too often, students are plunged into material far beyond their ability to understand, integrate, or apply. For many others already in practice, this book will make up for much of what they missed in their formal training and will enhance their competence as psychotherapists. (Althea J. Horner, Ph.D. )

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful for Clinical Practice, October 9, 2011
This review is from: First Steps in the Clinical Practice of Psychotherapy: A Practice-Oriented Psychodynamic Approach (Hardcover)
If you're looking primarily for theory, this book is not it.

If you're looking for a book that will help you with concrete suggestions about how to conduct yourself in basic clinical situations -- this is definitely for you: it is is a hands-on, no-nonsense, practice-oriented guide to doing clinical work. Very helpful when you're just starting out or, say, when you don't have access to a supervisor or peer and need some concrete pointers.

There is detailed information (that you can immediately use) about:

* Making first contact with a client.
* Conducting an intake interview and taking a history.
* Doing a Mental Status Exam and making a diagnosis.
* Referring out (when, how and where to).
* Screening for suicidality and for homicidality.
* Mandated reporting (when and how).
* Hospitalizing a client.
* Working with court ordered clients -- and more.

There's also a substantial section on concrete situations that might arise in the room with some ideas re: how to think about these and how to respond to the client, like (to name only a few): the client won't talk, the client won't stop crying, the client is always late, the therapist is going on vacation etc.

Overall, I highly recommend this book as a guide and reference book.

This review is from: First Steps in the Clinical Practice of Psychotherapy: A Practice-Oriented Psychodynamic Approach (Hardcover)
I had to read this for school. I found it a little boring but very practical and a great reference book in terms of review of law and ethics, and how to deal with certain situations that might come up in practice.
