Book Description

March 1, 2004
This easy-to-use, non-threatening fitness book focuses on the psychological aspects of weight loss and fitness, teaching women that their attitudes toward their bodies are more important than an iron will or unswerving commitment to exercise or diet. The author uses the metaphor of building a house in showing women how to achieve the physique they desire. In each chapter, the author suggests that you use your childhood memories to create an enjoyable diet and exercise routine.

Requiring much introspection and writing in a journal, the author guides readers to pick out patterns in their lives regarding self-image and to work on overcoming negative experiences and thinking of themselves in a more positive light. In addition to her advice concerning the mental side of fitness, the author also provides specific suggestions for exercising and eating. She encourages women to be positive and flexible, stressing the point that attitude is everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars intuitive and comprehensive, July 31, 2004

This review is from: The First Steps to Fitness: How to Stop Thinking about It and Start Doing It (Paperback)
I have read many fitness books and this one is the most comprehensive out there. The tone is warm and helpful, the suggestions are realistic and the results are amazing. I especially like the workbook format and the focus on the psychological and emotional aspects of fitness as well as the physical.
I would recommend The First Steps to Fitness to anyone trying to get or stay in shape, especially women who have poor body image and/or feel like whatever they've been doing to get into shape hasn't been working. The answers are in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful manual for fitness success!, April 9, 2004

Finally a fitness book that supplies ALL the tools you need to succeed in getting fit. Exercises with pictorial descriptions makes it easy for the novice weight trainer to get started with the program. I enjoyed the inspirational real stories of people finally "doing it" whether it be in diet/nutrition, emotional recovery, or strength training. I found the charts to be crucial in my own success, especially the action/result goals and resistance training program. This is a must have fitness book!
