First Steps in Teaching Creative Dance to Children is an excellent tool for the aspiring dance teacher. Mary Joyce prepares the beginning dance instructor and offers innovative ideas for seasoned teachers. As a dance educator, I have drawn on this text many times to spice up my lesson plans! I highly recommend this book to any teacher working with children as Joyce inspires adults as well as children to find the magic in creative dance.

When faced with teaching children's dance classes for the first time almost 30 years ago, I was fortunate to have this. Now conducting classes for college dance students on how to teach creative dance for children, I require this as the textbook. Very accessible; pick it up and use it immediately or use the theory and modify the ideas to create your own classes. The author organizes the medium of motion clearly and includes plans for a variety of ages in classes that enable children to create student-centered explorations of qualities of movement that are truly DANCE. I am really enjoying this book, a kind of guide and lesson index of teaching creative dance. The first half contains the elements of dance, everything you need to learn about to build a strong foundation. It emphasizes the PEG method and shows the ways to use it. The second half (or more like 1/3 of the book) lists lessons that are suitable for various age groups. There are lessons based on elements and lessons based on imagery. Towards the end of the book there is a chapter on extending the lessons and it highlights way to make the lesson more meaningful and relevant to the students. It focuses on using the imagination to make the lessons more interesting. Overall, I think the book is a great guide for a beginner in the subject of teaching creative dance to children.
