Book Description

October 18, 2000 Dancefutures (Book 1)
Tori Baylor is a dancer and an animal lover. Or is she an animal lover and a dancer? On the first day of school, she discovers that her class will dissect a frog this year, and she gathers her courage to tell the forbidding Mrs. Stengle she doesnt want to take part. The new science teachers rudeness comes as a shock, and Tori wishes she had a close friend to laugh it off with. Dance classes six days a week, however, leave little time for friends.Tori wonders if she should forget her dream of a ballet career and plan to work with animals instead. Her mothers arthritis is worsening, and Tori feels guilty seeing her limp off to work to pay for her lessons. Shed love to be an animal rights activist, if she could be brave enough. But not to dancehow could I bear it? she asks herself. Her mother, who once hoped to become a dancer, has always told Tori and her sister, Be sure to have a second string to your bow, meaning a second career choice. I do have two strings, Tori thinks, dance and animals. But which should be my first-string future?

The Dance Futures series, is one of the most inspirational series that I have read in a long time. I found the plight of Tori and her dreams of becoming a dancer throughtout many hardships a welcome change. I do not want to ruin the story, so I will not elaborate further. Honestly though, I am 25 years old and I am still rereading the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!!, June 29, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: First-String Future (Dancefutures) (Paperback)
From the moment you open this book, Tori sparkles with life. Her hopes, fears and joys are so real that you are drawn into her world. Torn between her dreams of becoming a dancer and an animal rights' activist, she comes up with resourceful ways to combine both worlds. In an age of high technology, it is refreshing to see a character who uses her imagination, personal resolve and ingenuity to solve her problems. The story is told with warmth and humor and is peopled with many interesting characters, including Cody, Toni's first love. She meets him when he tosses his jacket over her in a rainstorm: "I'm still shivering, but now it's not entirely from the cold and damp. One jacket stretched over two people makes a wonderfully small tent . . . My life has suddenly turned inside out like a windblown umbrella! I struggle for something intelligent to say." Tori manages to find her voice beautifully in this intelligently written, heartfelt book. Corbett is a writer with many strings to her bow.
