Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5-- George's consummate skill as a storyteller takes what could have been "just another" Thanksgiving book and raises it above the mundane. Beginning "in a time so long ago that only the rocks remember," she focuses on Plymouth Rock, a 200-ton boulder of Dedham granite, as the loom upon which to weave the heroic and tragic tales of the people who settled this land. The storytelling is direct, filled with details, and firmly grounded in place and time. Quickly drawn but very effective portraits of the times and the people heighten the presentation. Squanto's tragedy is movingly sketched. Readers will not miss the ironic contrast between the fate of the native population and those who came seeking a freer, more tolerant life, but George does not belabor the point, letting the events of history subtly underscore the irony. Locker is at his best with panoramic landscapes--the icy desolation of the melting glaciers; the storm-tossed ship on the ocean voyage; and the isolation of the place where the Pilgrims must bury their dead under cover of darkness, lest the "savages" know how many of them died. For all their attractiveness, however, the illustrations fail to match George's strong narrative with equal visual strength. The panoramic view distances readers from the events, softening the impact of the physical hardships and emotional pain inherent in the story. Whatever its minor flaws, though, this is a book most libraries will want to add to their collections. --Linda Boyles, Alachua County Library District, Gainesville, FL

From Kirkus Reviews

In a lucid, graceful narrative that begins with the arrival of Plymouth Rock (a unique European specimen left by a glacier ``In a time so long ago that only the rocks remember'') and that describes the Patuxets' settlement, its devastation by white men's disease, and Squanto's tragic captivity before going on to the Puritan venture, George returns--in specific, unsentimental detail--to the real historical events, quietly emphasizing the Native Americans' relationship with the land and the many things they taught the newcomers about using its bounty. Locker provides paintings in his usual lush, formal style; his elegant seascapes, landscapes, and sky have more drama than the small figures and limited action they dwarf, though a few scenes--e.g., the pilgrims' landing in a ``raging current''--are more like true illustrations. Actually, these gorgeous set pieces are a fine complement to George's text, making an effective backdrop for her powerful account. Correcting misconceptions and clarifying contemporary attitudes (``The Pilgrims called the celebration a Harvest Feast. The Indians thought of it as a Green Corn Dance''), this beautiful book brings fresh insight and a fairer balance to the traditional story. More About the Author

Jean Craighead George was born in a family of naturalists. Her father, mother, brothers, aunts and uncles were students of nature. On weekends they camped in the woods near their Washington, D.C. home, climbed trees to study owls, gathered edible plants and made fish hooks from twigs. Her first pet was a turkey vulture. In third grade she began writing and hasn't stopped yet. She has written over 100 books. Her book, Julie of the Wolves won the prestigious Newbery Medal, the American Library Association's award for the most distinguished contribution to literature for children, l973. My Side of the Mountain, the story of a boy and a falcon surviving on a mountain together, was a 1960 Newbery Honor Book. She has also received 20 other awards. She attended Penn State University graduating with a degree in Science and Literature. In the 1940s she was a reporter for The Washington Post and a member of the White House Press Corps. After her children were born she returned to her love of nature and brought owls, robins, mink, sea gulls, tarantulas - 173 wild animals into their home and backyard. These became characters in her books and, although always free to go, they would stay with the family until the sun changed their behavior and they migrated or went off to seek partners of their own kind. When her children, Twig, Craig and Luke, were old enough to carry their own backpacks, they all went to the animals. They climbed mountains, canoed rivers, hiked deserts. Her children learned about nature and Jean came home and to write books. Craig and Luke are now environmental scientists and Twig writes children's books, too.One summer Jean learned that the wolves were friendly, lived in a well-run society and communicated with each other in wolf talk -- sound, sight, posture, scent and coloration. Excited to learn more, she took Luke and went to the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory in Barrow, Alaska, where scientists were studying this remarkable animal. She even talked to the wolves in their own language. With that Julie of the Wolves was born. A little girl walking on the vast lonesome tundra outside Barrow, and a magnificent alpha male wolf, leader of a pack in Denali National Park were the inspiration for the characters in the book. Years later, after many requests from her readers, she wrote the sequels, Julie and Julie's Wolf Pack. She is still traveling and coming home to write. In the last decade she has added two beautiful new dimensions to her words beautiful full-color picture book art by Wendell Minor and others and - music. Jean is collaborating with award-winning composer, Chris Kubie to bring the sounds of nature to her words.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cute Pictures But Grossly Inaccurate Facts!, November 27, 2003
By
This review is from: The First Thanksgiving (Picture Puffins) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jean C. George's book may look good and sound nice, but it leaves out some critical facts and totally misrepresents others. Ms. George claims that the pilgrims came to the new world to seek their fortune and leaves out the real reason--religious persecution and a desire to worship God in their own way. Pilgrim leader William Bradford wrote in his diary that his motivation was, "a great hope... for advancing the Kingdom of Christ."

She also states that Thanksgiving itself "was not a day of pilgrim thanksgiving," but "pure celebration." This would also be news to Bradford, who wrote: "Through [the Lord's] blessing [there was] a fruitful and liberal harvest... for which mercy, they set apart a day of Thanksgiving."

Ms. George is free to write whatever kinds of children's books she wants, and she has done some very good ones. But this book does a disservice to the truth. Being politically correct must never be taken to the extreme of distortions and untruths. If Ms. George can't accurately, and in a fair and balanced way, give credit to the faith and belief in God which was central to the lives of the pilgrims and the main reason they risked the dangers they did, then she should leave the writing on this important part of our history to someone else.

5.0 out of 5 stars The First Thanksgiving`, November 12, 2001
This review is from: The First Thanksgiving (Picture Puffins) (Mass Market Paperback)
Want to know where Plymouth Rock came from and what it has to do with the pilgrims? What happened when the Mayflower finally sighted land? This is the book for you. The First Thanksgiving is history, community, geology, and science in a very beautifully illustrated and believable story of the colonization of Massachusetts. The pilgrims came to the New World looking for religious freedom only to be met by fear, death, hunger, and an insightful and helpful Pawtuxet, Squanto. It was from his willingness to share his knowledge that we have the celebration of Thanksgiving.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Thanksgiving book I have read., December 16, 2011
By
This review is from: The First Thanksgiving (Picture Puffins) (Mass Market Paperback)
Some reviewers have felt the author made too little of the Pilgrims' faith, but on the contrary I was pleased with her specific references to prayer, Bible reading, and worshiping God according to their consciences. I'm an evangelical Christian, and I found the book to give respectful and appropriate coverage to the Pilgrims' faith, while also acknowledging that they were joined by others who went to America for other reasons. Overall this is a wonderfully thorough, fair and balanced telling. It tells the story of Squanto in such a compelling way that I found it to be a powerful tale of redemption. Although Squanto was twice wronged by being first kidnapped and taken to Europe, and then making his way home only to find everyone dead of a European disease, still he took the newcomers to heart, and saw to it that they survived. Like in the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis, good came of the evil that had been done to Squanto, as he used his English language fluency, the badge of his years of suffering, to reach out to and ensure the survival of the newcomers. It is a powerful story of forgiveness and redemption, brought full circle in a beautiful way by the author. That was what made this the best Thanksgiving book I have read.

The paintings are beautiful in their own right.
