Be a kid again! This is a fun way to learn vocabulary.,

This review is from: First Thousand Words in German (First Picture Book) (German and English Edition) (Hardcover)
This is a completely graphical learning guide - just like when we learned to read and speak as kids. Each page has a different scenario: pages of rooms from and around the house, school, city streets, stores, restaurants, etc. At the center of the page is a very busy picture showing all kinds of activities which relate to the page topic. Then, the actions and items shown in the picture are shown separately around the border of the picture with their names. As a game, you can study the item's names, then try to identify them in the picture. Surprisingly, it is very effective. As an adult toying with a second language, this is a fun book to pick up off the coffee table and play with for a couple minutes each day. Good luck to you and have fun!

Fantastic vocab for any age!,

I absolutely love this book! The pictures are great as well as the pronunciation guide in the back. Definitely a must-have for anyone trying to teach multiple languages. My 2.5 year old absolutely loves this book.
The other fabulous plus to buying this book is the ONLINE pronunciation guide! If you go to their website, you can listen to / download little sound clips with perfect pronunciation for each page of the book (it's organized by page number on the website). I do sight-reading with my little ones (rather than phonics) and I made a powerpoint presentation with many of the words from this book and attached the sound files that I downloaded from their website. It worked perfectly!

This book has been a fun way to introduce my kids to German and helped me refresh on something I haven't taken since high school. While my kids are still pretty little (1 and 2) we've had a fun time learning that there are other words out there for dog, cat, bike, etc. The illustrations are great and keep my kids attention as well.

I've been learning German for a few years now, and this is a great book. I'd like to emphasize it's excellent for adults and children, particularly. Don't let the colorful drawings fool you into thinking its just for kids. A very handy book!

A "kid friendly" title for budding bilingual children,

This review is from: First Thousand Words In German Sticker Book (Usborne First Thousand Words Sticker Books) (German Edition) (Paperback)
With over 500 stickers illustrating simple German words, First Thousand Words in German Sticker Book is a superbly organized and presented activity book for young people. An easy-to-understand basic pronunciation guide enhances the charming full-color illustrations and the great many "peel-and-stick" stickers that help enhance memory and comprehension. First Thousand Words In German Sticker Book is an excellent and thoroughly "kid friendly" title for budding bilingual children. Also very highly recommended from Usborne is Heather Amery and Stephen Cartwright's First Thousand Words In Spanish Sticker Book.

As a native speaker I rate this a good little book for beginners/ children. Useful vocabulary and colourful, big pictures. Link to internet pronounciation guide and there is a written pronounciation guide included. Personally I am missing e few short German sentences or stories, but I love the large action loaded pictures. So I can make up my own stories for my daughter.

These books come in many languages. Each 2-page spread is a scene - a city, farm, kitchen, etc. -- the scenes themselves are so detailed and interesting that you could spend a lot of time just using imagination to make up story lines to accompany them. Around the perimeter of the pages are thumbnail sized images pulled from the scene, along with the description of the item in the language chosen. The scenes are the same in all the books, but of course the language changes. Not only is it a brilliant way for the publisher to print more cost efficiently, but it's a great way to learn how to say the same word in several different languages. We have the Japanese book, are now enjoying the German and will soon get French. The kids love it because of the detail in the photos, and because it kind of works like a 'seek & find' book in reverse. I recommend this series highly.

I love how this book lays out the words to learn by theme, but I wish that the pronounciation was on the same page as the words instead of the back of the book. If my child is trying to learn how to say the words, it's annoying to have to flip to the back of the book to find the word and then figure out how to pronounce it.

...readers need to use the on-line audio to practice pronounciation. I am not a 'ready' learner of foreign languages although I now can get by as a tourist in French, Italian and German. Having been exposed to different language learning techniques, I now appreciate the idea of linking a picture and a 'foreign' word directly, without the use of a parallel 'native' language word. Translation adds another learning step that can be skipped unless one is to go back and forth between each language. I found these pictures of 'rooms', a farm, a street scene, people and types of places to be charming and informative. To a major extent, this book is aimed at keeping a learner engaged with a new language in a non-threatening and whimsical way. Not all of these words will be your choice for the first 1000 words you would like to know but this book supplements a standard text and can help to keep a learner engaged when a break in 'hard' vocabulary and grammar study is needed.

I am a grandmother who wants to teach German to my grandchildren. This is the best language series I have seen. It helps me review my vocabulary and with young children, it has the pictures to go with the words. Pronunciation is listed in the back for the beginners of German.
We have this series in French, German and Polish. Highly recommend for everyone who wants help with vocabulary in the language. You have to begin somewhere! |
