5.0 out of 5 stars Endless possibilities for storytelling, finding objects, etc
The scenarios in this book seem to go on and on..there's always a picture I didn't notice before. This is an excellent book for picking out individual objects from a busy scene, matching, storytelling. I like how it offers a lot of verbs and shows them in action instead of only nouns. The illustrations are fun, creative and lively. This is my 22 mo. old daughter's...

1.0 out of 5 stars really disappointing!!
Generally, my boys and I love Usborne books. This sticker book version, however, is a big disappointment. I have just now read several other reviews with the same issue, so would advise anyone NOT to buy the sticker book. The pictures themselves are wonderful and I can see how the original reference version would be great. The stickers do not separate from each other...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great first 'GB' English book...but if you are an AMERICAN... read on..., June 19, 2007
This review is from: First Thousand Words (Paperback)
I recently bought this book (and also the first 1000 Words in German) for our daughter. The book is very good, but American parents may need to make some changes in order to speak the same "language" that your child is learning. There are around 100 absolutely BRITISH words in the book where you might need to also write the American English word, so that your child learns both. (For example Lorry, Sticking Plaster, Petrol, Pram, Push-Chair to name a few...are not used in America.) Otherwise it is a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for ESL students!, February 17, 1999
I live in Japan and teach English to both children and adults. This book is a fun, visual way to point out common everyday items and put a simple name to them. In fact, I am giving copies of this book to some of my younger students in hopes that they will continue learning English after I am gone!

5.0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite book., January 4, 1998
By A Customer
This book is full of exiciting scenes for your child to look through as you name all the different objects. Not a night goes by that my 18 month son doesn't bring me this book at least twice.

5.0 out of 5 stars my kids' favourite book, November 2, 2004
By
This book almost drove me crazy when my son was tiny. We were big on reading to him but whenever we allowed him his choice, he ALWAYS chose this book. So often that we began to call it the Oh No book. As in "Oh no! Not the Thousand Words Book again".

But we had a great time with the book. We spent hours and hours and hours talking about what was depicted in each two-page spread. The kid who spilled the drink. The cat on the cupboard. It's 13 years later and I still remember. My daughter loved it too.

We got the french version of the same series when we registered our kids in french-immesion nursery school - also great.

I've shared the Oh No book with countless parents of toddlers. Too bad it seems to be out of print - I'm looking for it for my nephew.

1.0 out of 5 stars really disappointing!!, June 29, 2011
Generally, my boys and I love Usborne books. This sticker book version, however, is a big disappointment. I have just now read several other reviews with the same issue, so would advise anyone NOT to buy the sticker book. The pictures themselves are wonderful and I can see how the original reference version would be great. The stickers do not separate from each other unless cut w scissors. Cutting 500 stickers is something we were actually prepared to do, BUT once cut, they did not stay stuck!! While working with a single page 3 of them fell off and were misplaced. Without the stickers, the book does not even work as a reference as there is not an image to match the word. Heads up! Buy the original version!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Neverending Story!!!, May 31, 2002
By A Customer
This book is the BEST! Each double page spread has a big picture full of things going on (a farm, a city street, a kitchen, a garden, a party, etc). Then around the edges it has individual pictures of most of the important parts of the picture (with the word below the picture). Even before our toddler could talk we could play "find the ___" in the picture. It REALLY helped his verbal skills.

The book helped us too because we could figure out what HE was calling things. At 10-14 months or so a horse was a nay-nay, crackers and cookies were frak-fraks, TV was ee-bee, etc. It was really fun watching him make the connection between the pictures in the book and real life. We would play the "find this item in our living room game" sometimes. I would point to the TV in the book and say "where is our TV?" and he would go point at it. Then the lamp, the door, the window, etc. Even though he could not say the words it was pretty clear that he understood them. He is three now (got the book at 10 months) and it is STILL his favorite book and he gets upset if we do not read and play with it each day. We were all surprised one day (at about 11 months) when he looked up at the TV and yelled "sheep!" when there was a flock on a TV commercial on the screen. We did not even know he knew that word. ;-)

I recommend this book to anybody with a toddler (on up). It is well worth the price! I think we have as much fun as he does! They make these books (the same pictures) in a bunch of different languages so this can be a fun gift for an older child too. You gotta get this book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy!! Stickers don't stick or peel off!, November 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Great idea for interaction with words and pictures.

There are 3 reasons for buying this book: Fun, kids peeling off stickers, and placing stickers.

The stickers don't peel off, don't stick to pages and it is no fun.

Just really poorly made.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Thousand Words in French, September 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: First Thousand Words (Hardcover)
A splendid book - even though a surprise as I thought I'd ordered a copy in English to replace the battered 30-year-old copy we had! But our 'baby' of 32 years ago has decided this is a fun way to learn 1000 French words and so has taken possession of my surprise. Meanwhile I'll order again, making sure I'm ordering the English version. But whether in English, French or whatever, this is a fun and informative book, adored by small children.

1.0 out of 5 stars very disappointed, June 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
We ordered this book for my daughter to use as she teaches English to people who speak other languages. We are big fans of Usborne books, but we were very disappointed with this book. The stickers were impossible to pull off the sheet. Instead of nice, neat stickers to place in the book there were torn, ragged edged stickers that looked terrible when placed in the correct spots. It looks so bad that she will not be using it in her classroom. Instead we will be returning it and hopefully getting our money back. If you want this book stick with the hardcover, non sticker book.
