Book Description

1593630735 978-1593630737 June 1, 2005
An analogy is a comparison between two things. It points out the similarities between two things that might be different in all other respects. Analogies cause us to think analytically about forms, uses, structures, and relationships.

First Time Analogies is the ideal launching pad to start nonreaders on the road to real thinking experiences with these pictorial and symbolic analogies that are both challenging and motivating. The book is divided into four sections that let you introduce analogies in a developmental way. The levels are:
  • recognizing relationships;
  • choosing one item to complete the analogy;
  • given two items, choosing two other items that have the same relationships; and
  • pairing up four items to complete two related pairs.
Exercises are presented on worksheets that require circling the correct answer, as well as cutting out pictures and pasting them in the correct spaces. Attractive illustrations will draw students into the engaging exercises. While they think they are just solving fun puzzles, they will be doing serious thinking and building a basis for future experiences in critical thinking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Analogies, August 9, 2007
This review is from: First Time Analogies (Paperback)
I purchased this book for my daughter who is starting Kindergarten this year to work on during the summer. She and I had a lot of fun with this book. Some of the activities require you to cut out pictures from a page, but there is a different activity on the back of that page. So you kinda have to work around the cutting by numbering them or something. All in all it was appropriate for her skill level, so we might try the next one in the series.

This review is from: First Time Analogies (Paperback)
I have a very bright and capable 5 years old who loves doing logic and critical thinking workbooks. She has done one analogies book before and then I bought this one (based on some previous review). I am happy with this one and it is a good starter for beginners.
