Biography

The fourth of seven children, John Royce Mathis was born on September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, Texas to Clem and Mildred Mathis. As a small boy, the family moved to Post Street in San Francisco. I AM ANGRY! Don't buy this CD! It's not REALLY a compact disc. Don't make the same mistake I made, ignoring that it is a Digital (DTS) Surround disc. This means that it is a High Definition Surround (HDS) disc that requires the use of a DTS digital surround decoder. Please! Why did they even bother putting this great Mathis record out on disc if the average CD purchaser can't even play it. This will not play on just your basic CD player - even if you've got the most expensive one on the market - it must have a decoder (a DTS decoder is required.) Unfortunate for me, I'm stuck with this because Amazon.com won't take it back since I opened the CD before knowing it would not play at all. ALL YOU WILL HEAR IS STATIC! NO MUSIC - just noise and static. TRUST ME - IT DOES NOT PLAY AT ALL BUT I CAN'T GET A REFUND. That's almost $25.00 I've wasted! (Amazon.com clearly states you may return any "unopened" CD.) However, for those of us not familiar with DTS - Amazon should have made a notation that after we purchased this CD (or whatever it is) that we wouldn't be able to play it. There should have been a warning that a special decoder was needed. Don't make the same mistake. The music on this recording gets five stars. This mess of needing a DTS decoder makes this overall disc a 1 star. I can not understand why all of Johnny Mathis' albums from the 1970s are not on CD. And, then the one of a few that is requires more than just your normal CD player to hear it. Overpriced!

This gorgeous early 70's Mathis set has got to be one of the finest from this singer's brilliant career which continues to this date and is still going strong...sublime orchestrations perfectly showcase awesome vocal performances making this collection a reason to update ones sound system to DTS and that's exactly what I did and was it ever worth it just to hear and experience this masterwork!!! Surround Sound and Mathis flowing from one great classic to another is the ultimate musical experience and Speak Softly Love (Love Theme From Godfather) is the definitive version with Mathis making this classic a masterpiece!!! Grab this only issue of this classic fast while it is available as this is one of the finest male vocal lp's ever produced and lets hope that more of the great 70's output by this legendary singer are released soon and hopefully in my lifetime...Song Sung Blue and Me And Mrs. Jones are from this same great period and are crying out to be released on Compact Disc and let's hope soon and in this same great DTS sound format. Bravo Johnny...you are the finest!!!
