Biography

The fourth of seven children, John Royce Mathis was born on September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, Texas to Clem and Mildred Mathis. As a small boy, the family moved to Post Street in San Francisco. It was there that he learned an appreciation of music from his father who taught him his first song, “My Blue Heaven”. At age eight, his father purchased an old upright piano for $25. This gorgeous early 70's Mathis set has got to be one of the very finest from this great singer's brilliant career which continues to this day and is still going strong...sublime orchestrations perfectly showcase glorious vocal performances making this collection a reason to update your sound system to DTS and that's exactly what I did when I received this DTS High Definition Surround Sound compact disc and it was it ever worth it just be able to experience this masterpiece that is a rare vocal treasure chest of classic songs (check out the list!) sung to the ultimate with each clearly becomming the definitive version as you listen in wonderous bliss!!! Grab this only issue of this classic fast while it is available as this is one of the finest male vocal lp's ever produced and they don't make them like this anymore...hopefully more of the great 70's output by this legendary singer will be released soon and hopefully in my lifetime...Song Sung Blue and Me And Mrs. Jones are from this same great period and are crying out to be released on Compact Disc (it's incredible that these classic lp's and other Mathis classic's still remain in the vaults~what are they waiting for?) and hopefully in this same great DTS Surround Sound format. Bravo Johnny...you are the finest!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mathis' Sun Session, April 10, 2006
By
Pit O'Maley "Moon Man" (Alameda, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
A long-awaited release of Johnny's that features his take on soft-rock, folk and popular tunes with a Sun Sessions treatment. Echo, double-tracking and overdubbing effects go a long way in delivering the irreplaceable Mathis in a very intimate production. "The first time ever.." alone is worth the CD purchase when you hear him sound like he is within reaching distance, perhaps in a phone booth next to you singing those unforgettable lyrics by himself. The prduction varies with each number, but again, his voice is separated from the backing in a uniquely intimate fashion. This mid-70's treatment continued on 2 other albums, which is why I refer to this intimate effect his "Sun Sessions."
