Book Description

Derrick and Trevor used to have an incredibly passionate relationship, full of spontaneity and sizzle. Now that their son is off to college, they want to put their days of routine, vanilla sex behind them and bring back some of that spark.

Realizing that they're empty-nesters, Trevor begins to notice their age difference. He suddenly feels old and unsure of himself, and isn't confident Derrick still desires him. When Trevor decides to keep his health issues and gray hairs down there to himself, Derrick is hurt by his partner's secretive behavior and thinks Trevor must be having an affair.

Nothing could be further from the truth, but Trevor doesn't know how to communicate his fears to his partner. He desperately wants to reconnect with Derrick and rev up their sex life, but will it be enough to reclaim their marital bliss?

Overall
This tale of two empty-nesters trying to reclaim the passion they once had in the bedroom while each thinks the other is no longer interested relies solely on the characters to carry the story. Although there is little plot and all of it is relatively predictable due to the nature of the story, this is a nice exploration of two men who love one another but let life and fear get in the way. This is neither a bad story, nor a great one. It's enjoyable, but mellow.

Strengths
The driving strength in this story is the depth of emotion these struggling men evoke. Initially I didn't really feel their pain, but as the story continued and they attempted again and again to fix the relationship, I was sucked into their quandary and ached each time they thought the other wasn't interested. What is especially nice about this story is that it is written from both character's perspectives, so while we suffer while each suffers, we also get to see the opposite perspective and understand why what happened happened and how the other is feeling. The majority of the novella is bitterly sweet, but thankfully ends on a happier note.

This is definitely a character-centric story, and the two men are strong enough for this length of work. While they are both independent businessmen, they are also basic men with urges, insecurities, and assumptions. Although the situations are emotionally dramatic, for the reader there is also a tinge of humor as they keep screwing things up for one another. They are just people behaving like people, in a sweet, sometimes frustrating, way.

Weaknesses
Although there is nothing I would pin strongly against this novella, there were a few points that kept it from scoring higher.

The writing wasn't bad, but because the story is so dependent on voice, there were moments where the writing was a weakness, although overall I wouldn't say that's true.

By the nature of the style of story being told here, and the dual perspective, there are very little surprises plot-wise, although some of the events are surprising. Some people may find this boring and unimaginative, but I found it a nice "slice of life" type story. A romantic comedy of sorts.

Trevor's feeling old seemed a little forced, since he's not that much older and he's in great shape, but maybe being an empty-nester makes you do crazy things.

This was an interesting story of a long term couple who finds the passion and sizzle they used to have has grown dimmer and dimmer in their bedroom. This was the first time I read one of this author's stories and FIRST TIME, FOREVER is a sweet story of two people learning to reconnect with one another after their last child is off to college. This is definitely a character driven storyline and the two main characters, Derrick and Trevor, were enjoyable if at times a wee bit predictable. At times their actions and reactions to one another were humorous as well as sweet. I really liked how an established older couple related to their own empty nest and the issues of getting older as well were written rather nicely and worked perfectly in FIRST TIME, FOREVER.

Meet Derrick and Trevor. A long term couple who has had years of having vanilla sex in place of the red hot passion they used to share early in their relationship. But when their son leaves for college, both think this is perfect to get that much needed spark back. Except for misunderstandings, miscommunications and more seem to screw it up time and again. Can these two fix what issues lay between them even as they feel their connection grow weaker? I loved the in-depth look into their relationship. This author does a nice job in creating two intriguing characters that need a bigger book, in my opinion. Derrick and Trevor are enjoyable, relatable and can be downright humorous at times. And man, their passion when it comes back roaring is scorching hot. There is one scene with a red couch that will singe your fingertips.

FIRST TIME, FOREVER is a story of recapturing passion in a long term relationship that has gone complacent and comfortable to one that fairly sizzles again. KC Burn is a talented writer and one I look to read more from. If you enjoy a short novella that is about established couple refinding their passion then try FIRST TIME, FOREVER and settle in one chilly afternoon for a few hours of reading pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous, Sexy, and Honest April 2, 2013

I LOOOOOOVED this book. Truly. I did. Enter Trevor and Derrick. They've been married for several years and Trevor is hitting the big 4-0 and he suddenly starts to feel old. Derrick is 6 years younger and completely unaware of Trevor's fears. So, the story goes back and forth with Derrick and Trevor giving their perspective of different issues, fears, wants, desires. I cannot say enough about this wonderfully written story. I was entranced. K.C. Burn enveloped me into this world where I felt like I was experiencing EVERYTHING with both of them. The love and intense feeling that each had for each other was so beautiful. It made me love how people who've been married for a while could still feel that intense love for one another. And isn't it important to retain the passion and lust in a relationship when you've been together for a few years?

I do have to say that the video scene. *sigh* had me perspiring, but also feeling a bit sheepish. Perhaps I'm just not ready for sex tapes. LOL But, the sentiment was appreciated. HA.

I laughed whole heartily at so many scenes and as I was listening to it on audio, I know people couldn't help looking at me as I laughed out loud like a crazy person. OH WELL. They didn't know what they were missing!!!

I for one will be reading more from K. C. Burn.
Thankyoumuch.

Wonderful. Invigorating read.

More About the Author

I've been writing for as long as I can remember and I'm a sucker for happy endings (of all kinds). After moving from Toronto to Florida for the hubby to take a dream job, I discovered a love of gay romance and fulfilled my own dream -- getting published. By day, I edit web content and at night I neglect my supportive, understanding hubby and needy cat to write stories about men loving men in the past, present and future. Writing is always fun and rewarding, but writing about my guys is the most fun I've had in a long time, and I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I do.
