Cain's title is alarming (Last chance? Having children after 35 is no longer unusual; try 45!). And her suggestion that pregnancy-induced hypertension can be prevented isn't totally accurate. The possible therapies, such as aspirin intake, for heading off this "older" pregnant women's disease are still experimental. Cain's advice otherwise is worthwhile, however. Perhaps only half of her material actually aims at older mothers, and pregnant or would-be pregnant readers wanting a general, realistic approach to motherhood will find it most useful. First-Time Mothers, Last-Chance Babies takes an extremely thoughtful look into a subject that is ignored in our society. Her carefully written and researched book reveals the truth about the difficulty, and the rewards, of parenting later in life. If you or anyone you know is considering having children this book is a necessity. I read it from cover to cover and value the advice it gave me.
