1.0 out of 5 stars Not appropriate for learning shapes by "feel" June 12, 2007
Format:Cards|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am a speech-language pathologist, and many of the children I work with benefit from using touch to learn. However, the cards in this set are not good for learning the shapes because the "feel" portions of the card are not always in the shape being described! A child should not be feeling a crooked ribbon shape while s/he hears the word square! Also, there is no need to have color associated with touch, because color is purely visual. Touching a fuzzy duckling and saying yellow is going to confuse a language impaired child and perhaps some very young children. It would be better to have more shapes (made properly) or numbers.

Throw these away and start over, DK. I know you can do better!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very sturdy and great for motor skills May 6, 2010
Format:Cards
We received a set of these cards when my daughter was around 10 months old. She is now 19 months old and this continues to be one of her favorite toys.

Pros:
- easy-to-open box with velcro closure that has not worn out
- very sturdy cards that survived my daughter's teething stage
- the top of the box does not detach - instead it flips up and over, so it's easy for my daughter to open the box herself, then pull cards out and put cards back in. This was her favorite aspect of these cards and she can play with them for a long time, either by herself or with an adult

Cons:
- My daughter is not that all that interested in the touch and feel or learning aspects of the cards. They may be more appropriate for older children who can understand the concept of shapes and colors.

Overall these DK card packs are great, and I would buy them for a baby shower or for a first birthday gift. For a young child or toddler I would recommend the First Words pack or maybe the animals pack, as younger children can understand those first. The First Words pack might also be a good one to practice sign language, if you are teaching your child baby sign language as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not great December 28, 2009
Format:Cards|Amazon Verified Purchase
The "touch and feel" aspect of these cards are the real drawback here. That was why I bought these flashcards instead of plain ones, but most of the textures are the same, and very smooth, so there is not much to actually feel. Also, there is a picture of a dress, purse, and girls' ballet slippers, so they are a bit gender biased as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun cards that teach and entertain! August 24, 2007
Format:Cards|Amazon Verified Purchase
My daughter is a flashcard connosieur! She loves all kinds - even just the plain ones with pictures and words. But these...oh these are a flashcard baby's version of Shangri-La! How fun to feel the textures and connect those right and left sides of the brain! And now that she's 18 months old, the fun is even greater because she's "getting" it. We will use these until they are worn and bent and then, after my newborn son has also had his fun, we will cut them apart to add to my children's scrapbooks. Fun for every child!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool! December 20, 2011
By KeKo
Format:Cards|Amazon Verified Purchase
I wanted to find something to help my son with his word association. I was told time and time again that realistic photos provided a better learning experience than hand drawn/cartoon pictures. These were excellent. Not only do they provide a realistic picture, they are visually stimulating as well as interactive. The cards provide different approaches to continuing the word use (it provides suggested ways to interact such as "What sound does a duck make?" "What color is a duck?") There is even an instruction manual to guide parents in using the cards with their children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased with this set. December 7, 2011
Format:Cards|Amazon Verified Purchase
We love these, we own ALL the decks of flashcards by DK. Our littlest loves to just look/touch them, and our oldest likes to play hide and seek with them.(he leaves the room, we hide them, he finds them...great game, he has to remember how many were there (counting) and which ones he's still looking for (observation) etc.)
Also each deck comes with a 'for the parents card' this makes it easy for sleep deprived parents to make them educational and fun! I always add one to my Baby shower gift baskets :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the diaper bag!!! September 22, 2009
By C. Conz
Format:Cards|Amazon Verified Purchase
We have tried other brands of flash cards and they all have been a waste of money. They are usually poorly constructed and bend easily. However, these flash cards are GREAT!! We have purchased several different different ones them from animals to numbers. They are very heavily constructed which prevents my 2 year old from bending them! My son loves to feel the different textures on each card.

These would make a GREAT gift. I keep a set in my diaper bag for when we are out to eat or somewhere that we need distractions.

Well worth the money and highly recommended!!
