5.0 out of 5 stars Really, really love them! February 3, 2007
Format:Cards
I got these for my son when he was 18-months and he LOVES these! He has already memorized both the First Words and almost all of the Shapes & Colors cards.

I went out and bought ALL FOUR packs. They are all great!

Each card includes a big color photograph of the item plus some sort of tactile addition - such as hair on the cat, bumpy tires on the tractor, sticky areas on the jelly. Plus, on the back of each card there are "talking points" and suggestions for questions to ask and things to do. It also has five different translations for the object, so you can help your little one learn other languages.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the cards are super strong and will resist bending and folding if your baby plays with them. My baby has at least once dumped them on the floor and danced on them - and they as good as new!

They are now part of our nightly routine. We "do cards" right before we read a book or two each night.

I would say that First Words are good for 12 mo+, and Shapes & Colors is good for 18+ (there are some more difficult cards, such as a picture of a glittery purse shaped like a heart - my son still has no idea what that is!). Animals is a little more advanced (just because it includes some more obscure animals) and Counting is the most advanced (but it is still awesome and teaches great concepts - for example, there is a picture of a jar of marbles and another card with an empty jar, so the baby can compare "many marbles" versus "no marbles").

Buy these! And, I hope the company makes even more of them (would love to see more themed word cards, such as "food," "bathtime," "bedtime," "outdoors," etc.) I will buy them all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for little hands April 27, 2007
By J. Cire
Format:Cards
My 15 month old daughter loves these cards. We have the complete set of first words, animals, numbers, colors, etc. She pulls them out daily and looks at them. She brings them to me so that I can teach her what the picture is telling her. They are sturdy under toddler feet, and in toddler hands. A wonderful product from the great publisher of DK. I recommend them over all other cards for this age group (and believe me I looked for an alternative).

3.0 out of 5 stars Are they really that great? May 31, 2012
Format:Cards|Amazon Verified Purchase
Let me start from the moment I opened the box. I wanted to check out the cards before handing them to my "hungry" 14-month-old son (he chews on EVERYTHING). My first impression - clear graphics, nice colors, perfect size of cards and durable. I like the ideas on the back of the card; they make them usable for several age groups and could interest him in new ways later. I am pleased with most of the words chosen, but some of them really don't seem like the best choice for first words (i.e., sweater, jelly and fire truck). I agree with another reviewer that there are many other items in everyday life that could be more effective; perhaps it was hard to tie a "touch and feel" element to them. The texture provided for ball doesn't represent what I feel is a more common texture for a ball (the one provided for shoes would be better), especially not a beach ball as shown on the card. Also, being that these are "Touch and Feel" cards, I was expecting each one to have an actual touch or feel element. I don't consider metallic or sparkly spot on the keys, car and fire truck to provide a true "feel" experience (this is an even bigger problem in the "Things That Go" set). It is also a bit annoying that several of the words appear in the "Things That Go" card set, though I can see how seeing those words with different pictures could maybe be a benefit. Still, I think they could have used different words to give more variety overall. I am glad I was able to find these cards several dollars cheaper on Amazon than on other websites, but I must admit I am a little bummed. I am hopeful that my son will have fun with them in the years to come. At the moment he is nibbling on the teddy bear's fur...hungry toddlers CAN consume the fur...... Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for learning and fun December 11, 2006
Format:Cards|Amazon Verified Purchase
My daughter loves these cards. She is 14 months and can recognize the different items when I show her the cards. She especially is fascinated by the "jelly" card, as it is sticky to touch. She likes to play with them, taking them out of the box, putting them back in, and stacking them. They come with suggestions for games to play with them as the child grows older. They are sturdy, and I expect that we'll be using them for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun durable cards December 13, 2007
Format:Cards|Amazon Verified Purchase
My daughter loves these cards. The jelly card is no longer sticky, but she still likes to dump out all the cards and also tries to put them back in the box.

The box is very sturdy and has a velcro dot closure. The cards a fairly sturdy as well. Some of the touch and feel parts aren't really feely as they are only shiny foil "painted" on, so it's more of a visual kind of thing.

Since getting these cards and the other three sets, my daughter has quickly learned all the words. It is quite amazing. She also likes to open all the boxes and dump the cards out in a big pile. Then she stands on the pile and slips around on them. She sometimes lies down and makes "flash card angel" which just makes a huge mess. The worst part is me having to separate out the cards.

Some cards are similar to others in the other boxes. We have two tractors, two trains, two buses, two dogs, two cats, but each one is a slightly different view.

I think these cards helped a lot. I ask her to get a specific card and she looks for it and gives it to me. I also show her cards and she tells me what is on the card. She also will run off and get her toy that is the same as the card. For instance, the dog card, she goes to get her stuffed dog which looks completely different from the one on the card, but she knows that they are both dogs. She'll point to the card, and then to the toy and repeat the word. Sometimes I end up with a big pile of her toys that match those on the cards.

Overall these cards are a good value. They are much more sturdy than other cards (Baby Einstein) that she has. She likes to feel the textures on the card too. The images are big and clear without distractions on the card itself.
