5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T HAVE A BABY WITHOUT IT!
I have three children of my own and also raised my little sister. This makes four. The first two are quite a bit older than the last - and I've used the Caplan's series of books over and over. Although there is much practical advice and interesting facts about child development, the overall result is a tired and dated manual. Some of the advice is downright dangerous! 5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T HAVE A BABY WITHOUT IT!, October 17, 1998

I have three children of my own and also raised my little sister. This makes four. The first two are quite a bit older than the last - and I've used the Caplan's series of books over and over. I don't profess to be an "expert" - but I do write a nationally syndicated parenting column called Parent to Parent. My name is Jodie Lynn and at least I do know a little about kids. While no book can tell you exactly how to perceive your children's developmental stages - this one is pretty darn close. I tell all my parents in my parenting classes (and have for years) to make this book - and the others in the Caplan's series - - very much part of their home library. If I could get all parents to read thesse books - our society would be a much better place. This is how strongly I feel about people learning about their children's developmental stages. ALL PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS need to know what it is each child can do at various stages in order to set up realistic and acceptable guidelines for that individual child. RUN - DON'T WALK - to get this book. Healthy Parenting!

The book explored the conflict between putting infants to sleep on their back as opposed stomach. There is a clinically accepted link between Babies sleeping on their stomach and SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrom. There isn't a pediatrition or health nurse on the planet who would recomend putiing an infant to sleep on their belly, let alone give an option between the two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Far and away the best book to track developmental progress!, July 10, 2000

I had my first child in 1989 and the book The First Twelve Months of Life (Capland) was an absolute neccessity to track my child's developmental progress. Not only does it tell you what your baby's Gross Motor skills are each month, it also gives you clear and concise information on Fine Motor, Language, Social, and many other developmental skills. I am having my second child shortly and I went shopping for a book that would be as informative and helpful as the book by Capland. I couldn't find one. I ended up getting the same book and I plan on referring to it often.

I purchased this book for my daughter who is a new mother. I had received a copy of the original version as a gift when my son was born 33 years ago. Even though it has been updated, the book is outdated. It is still interesting, especially to those of us from the 'old school,' though with so many changes in pediatricians' recommendations (back vs. stomach, delaying feeding whole foods, etc.), the book is not appreciated by new mothers - they are afraid to stray even a little bit from their pediatrician's advice. I can only wonder how we were able to raise such healthy and happy children! :)

This review is from: The First Twelve Months of Life: Your Baby's Growth Month by Month (Mass Market Paperback)
I first bought this book in 1977 when my first child was born and it became my Baby Bible. I've bought it for new mothers many times since then, and am now buying it for MY kids. Great book. Don't try to raise a baby without it.

I liked its book because of its great info on baby's motor development month by month. However, the information on breastfeeding was horrible... and some of it was wrong! Please don't rely on this book for advice on weaning, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understand the development of your babies brain., October 26, 2000

My pediatrician recommended it after the birth of my first child. It was fun and fascinating to understand better how my babies brain was developing. I read and reread each chapter. I have bought it as a baby gift for at least ten people.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for first-time parents, December 1, 1998

This review is from: The First Twelve Months of Life: Your Baby's Growth Month by Month (Mass Market Paperback)
This book, more than any other, gave us the best advice about caring for our newborn. As first-time parents, we were apprehensive about the problems we might encounter, particularly in the first several months. "The First Twelve Months..." was a great help to us.

Loved this book when I had my first child 28 years ago. This has been my favorite baby shower gift ever since. And the new mothers all love the gift.

I used this book when both my girls were in their first year. I bought it again when my grandson was born. Even bought one for my daughter. This book helps you to know what developement was next at each month. When they are kind of "boring" in their early weeks of life you can read ahead and see when he is supposed to smile, sit up, babble, roll over and other stages of change. I especially liked it when I was a first time mom. It made me feel so much more confident in my skills and the baby's. I would highly recommend this book even though it was a long time ago when it was written. The times may change but the first year of the baby's developement is pretty much the same no matter what year your baby is born.
