Biography

Vocalist/bass guitarist/songwriter Glenn Hughes is a true original. No other rock musician has carved such a distinctive style blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk. 4.0 out of 5 stars The whole rock feel is getting watered down by a more R & B oriented sound, September 3, 2009
The Good
"Crave" has a funky guitar lick introduction that is repeated throughout the track. Hughes brings the soul with his unique vocals. Despite it's overly drawn-out title, "First Nuclear Underground Kitchen" has quite the infectious groove. Hughes unleashes all of his heart, soul, and blues on "Love Communion." A little brass section adds to the already funked-up rhythms. "Imperfection" slows things down and focuses on the melody and soul of Glenn's high-end vocals. "Never Say Never" relies heavily on a thick bass line and enduring vocals. "Too Late to Save the World" mixes subtle rhythms with high-octane ones for one hell of a ride.

The Bad
Honestly, this has to be the worst album title ever. The album cover lacks of effort. It seems Hughes is heading more down an R & B path on this one.

The Verdict
I knew it would be tough for Hughes to follow Music for the Divine. That album was flawless. In that review I said that Glenn gets better and better with each album. However, with F.U.N.K. I think he may have taken a step back. Don't misunderstand me, Hughes performance is great. It's full of soul, power, and melody. It's just that the whole rock feel is getting watered down by a more R & B oriented sound. Not that it doesn't work for him, it just doesn't work for this rock fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great funk-rock, August 25, 2008

If you are a fan of Building the Machine you will love this. Very creative funk-rock-soul record. Hard cross genre to tackle well. He has his hard rock roots but is ever expanding and this is a very musical record. 10 out of 13 tracks are strong. I hardly buy any new music, if I do it's from an older artist and I am still selective. Of course this is an import. Glad to see a talented artist making new music. Some new ones should take some lessons.
