The Good
"Crave" has a funky guitar lick introduction that is repeated throughout the track. Hughes brings the soul with his unique vocals. Despite it's overly drawn-out title, "First Nuclear Underground Kitchen" has quite the infectious groove. Hughes unleashes all of his heart, soul, and blues on "Love Communion." A little brass section adds to the already funked-up rhythms. "Imperfection" slows things down and focuses on the melody and soul of Glenn's high-end vocals. "Never Say Never" relies heavily on a thick bass line and enduring vocals. "Too Late to Save the World" mixes subtle rhythms with high-octane ones for one hell of a ride. The Bad Honestly, this has to be the worst album title ever. The album cover lacks of effort. It seems Hughes is heading more down an R & B path on this one. The Verdict I knew it would be tough for Hughes to follow Music for the Divine. That album was flawless. In that review I said that Glenn gets better and better with each album. However, with F.U.N.K. I think he may have taken a step back. Don't misunderstand me, Hughes performance is great. It's full of soul, power, and melody. It's just that the whole rock feel is getting watered down by a more R & B oriented sound. Not that it doesn't work for him, it just doesn't work for this rock fan.

If you are a fan of Building the Machine you will love this. Very creative funk-rock-soul record. Hard cross genre to tackle well. He has his hard rock roots but is ever expanding and this is a very musical record. 10 out of 13 tracks are strong. I hardly buy any new music, if I do it's from an older artist and I am still selective. Of course this is an import. Glad to see a talented artist making new music. Some new ones should take some lessons.

...He keeps getting better. There are a lot of reasons to buy this disc, but the best one is the song "Love Communion." Why this tune hasn't been picked up by every US radio station and played to death is beyond me. It's a masterpiece and a good enough justification for the price of the disc by itself. Mr. Hughes' voice is better than ever and there is not a better bass player anywhere. In fact, I defy you to find anyone who comes close in either catagory. This disc features some excellent guest musicians too, as well as Glenn's regular band (and those boys can PLAY). Listen, I'm a Glenn Hughes fan - plain and simple. The guy has been putting out the highest quality music almost since I can remember. If his name is written on it, it's going to be good. I've never been disappointed. How many musicians can YOU say that about? Just buy yourself a copy, put on your headphones, turn it up to a comfortable level, sit back and listen. You'll be tapping your feet (and hands) and moving your head around in no time. Ahhh man, that's gooooood.

This album is fantastic. This was the soundtrack to my summer of 2008. I haven't listened to it in awhile, so I won't attempt a complete review, but it is a great album.

I believe this CD is my all time favorite Glenn Hughes, plus it had Chad Smith on drums.

What can I say?! Been a hughes from Medusa. I kind of lost touch of him over the years. I mean I thought I had an idea of what he was doing (HUGHES/THRALL , Gary Moore , Tony Iommi.) It was not really till the day I saw the People mag headline "Glenn Hughes Dies". That got me back on track. I had missed ALOT. FROM NOW ON... BURNING JAPAN LIVE just to name a few. But this is a Glenn being one of the best talents there ever was. Everything about this cd his Bass, Voice, backing band is GREAT.! Kinda makes you wonder what Deep Purple could have sounded like.

I somewhat agree with Zappa. When I first put this album in the first 3-4 songs kick butt. But other than that not much to speak for other than the ballads. I must say I am disappointed especially with the positve five star reviews it has been given.

I have to say I was very disappointed by this album and don't understand the 5 star reviews, especially for nearly $30!! I personally think this is his worst effort since "Feel" (which explains Poustie's review since he loved that album). In fact, after several listens only 2 tracks really jump out at me - #1 "Crave" and #4 "Love Communion". At least "Feel" has 4-5 songs that I like.
So I guess that's the bottom line; if you prefer Glenn's flower-power hippie funk side and like the CD "Feel" (which I still think is superior to this) then by all means get F.U.N.K, you'll probably like it. But if, like me, you prefer Glenn's rocking side stay away from this unless you are a hardcore fan. Then I'd say go ahead and buy it and make up your own mind because it's not like I'm never going to listen to it again or anything, I'm just saying I'm disappointed compared to the last several...heck everything he's released this millennium!! And, if you do prefer his rock side I sincerely hope you already have "Soul Mover" which I think is simply one of the greatest albums he has ever released. I also like the CD he did with Toni Iommi, Fused, which was released the same year. So, for me, 2005 was a "banner" year for Glenn Hughes! |
