Sweet Destiny..., January 14, 2000
This review is from: First Vision [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Mariah Carey needs no introduction and it is, after nearly a decade of seeing her and hearing her everywhere, somewhat difficult to remember a time when she was not a star on a truly global scale, whose very forename is synonimous with seven octaves of unparalleled perfection. This video, however, is such a revelation - it is Mariah, a star very early in her ascendancy here, introducing her songs.
And what songs! The video opens with "Vision Of Love", a song which must surely be extolled as one of the most auspicious and powerful debuts of any artist. Her enchanting voice (with the lisp far more apparent here than it is now)is the first step, then there is the interview; a relaxed Mariah chats freely about her upbringing and her singing mother. You feel priviledged to witness the very genesis of true musical genius!
The songs are, as anyone who has heard "Mariah Carey" the LP will know, simply breath-taking - notwithstanding her youth and the fact that she has written her own material. There is, unfortunately, a strong feeling of coercion, that her management are constantly forcing you to remember she has written these songs herself. Furthermore, it is entertaining to see that, without fail, at every belt of that high upper-register an open-mouthed Mariah stands resolutely in front of the camera, lest we forget that it is actually her singing it and no production-trickery. In fairness, with such a rare talent, it takes a great deal of convincing that it is genuine, so you can hardly blame her for trying to categorically prove its validity.
Perhaps the best reason for buying the video, though, besides the apocryphal tales of hardship as an 'odd-jobber', lies in the footage of Mariah actually singing live. The stunning rendition of "Vanishing" is a testament to her amazing ability to hold seemingly endless lines, with no hint of running short of breath. The other track, a cover of the Aretha Franklin hit, "Don't Play That Song For Me (You Lied)", shows her voice to different effect, emulating Aretha's skill of seeming to keep pushing those notes higher and higher and higher. (Again, we are positioned square in front for that extra high note, just to remind you it's really her!)
All in all, it is an entertaining and pleasing video, which is so much more captivating to-day, when viewed against the backdrop of her unprecedented success. No-one could dispute her amazing gift, but this video is special because it is a gift as yet untainted by the trappings of mega-stardom or that frightful appellation: Diva!
WELL WORTH IT!

Mariah is Madame Butterfly!, January 30, 2001
This review is from: First Vision [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I bought this video a while back and finally watched it. I like it because it shows when Mariah first started out, her first videos ( Vison of Love, etc.)and she sings my favorite song VANISHING, live along with other live performances. You learn things about Mariah and you see her as just a teen with so much more to go through to get where she is now. If you know of all her albums and videos, it's fun to see the transformations she has made over the years. It's an essential video for true Mariah fans to own!

This is great!, October 6, 2002
This review is from: First Vision [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I love this video because you can take a look at Mariah at a time when she was not a household name. It gives you a chance to see her as she is at certain parts where the filming is reallly raw. This video also has some great live performances at a small club. "Don't Play that Song for Me" by Aretha Franklin is my favorite song she has covered to date. She also performs "Vanishing" at track that is the least "produced" song on her first album and really showcases her voice. This video is fun and great to watch a million times!
