4.0 out of 5 stars Apocalyptic biker metal - reissued, December 9, 2009
This review is from: First Visit (Audio CD)
I have to admit I was a little disappointed when I first heard First Visit, the 1985 debut album from post-New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) band Rogue Male. I had heard great things about Rogue Male, and am moderately obsessed with British hard rock and metal from the 80's, but First Visit just sounded like your average Motorhead album to me.

Well, I gave it a few more spins and fortunately it does grow on you. Motorhead is obviously an influence on this band. Then again, so is The Road Warrior. It makes for an interesting sound - part hard-driving biker rock (see "Crazy Motorcycle"), part apocalyptic punk/metal along the lines of Warfare or GBH, and as melodic as it is misogynistic. It's Neanderthal rock, but it's amusing Neanderthal rock!

I wouldn't call this an essential British rock/metal album, but fans of bands like Motorhead, Warfare and maybe even Saxon to some degree ought to get a kick out of this album.

Oh, and how about that cover. A cyborg or a mullet would have been quite "metal" in 1985, but a cyborg with a mullet - that's just epic.

Edition Notes: First Visit was finally issued on CD in 2008 by Polish reissue label Metal Mind. The CD comes in a numbered digipack (limited to 2,000 copies), features digitally remastered sound, and includes two bonus tracks - "The Real Me" and "All Over You" - from the band's 1985 The Real Me single.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm gonna tell ya/What the Rogues are gonna do, May 13, 2009

I forgot how aggressive and great this album is. I am so thrilled to have First Visit on CD, 24 years later. Singer/guitarist Jim Lyttle had a serious Lemmy from Motorhead thing going on -- namely, the hoarse, roaring vocals; and like Lemmy, he sang and played like he REALLY meant it. Every nasty, androcentric word and note.
What else can we ask for? I know: The cretinous "where on you will I put my bodily fluids?" opus that is "All Over You."
The other reason why "First Visit" is a stone cold classic: The album cover. If you're a post-First Visit terminator, or a robot man, you must ALWAYS have a mullet as extreme as Lyttle's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rogue, March 17, 2011
This review is from: First Visit (Audio CD)
I used to have Rogue Male - First Visit on vinyl in the 80's. I was stunned to see it reissued and here at Amazon.com. I of course grabbed the CD. I really like being able to replace my long gone 80's metal vinyl with CD's and now MP3's. Although fairly rare and unheard of in the U.S., Rogue Male - First Visit was in the group of some of my most listened to along side of Motorhead, Tank, Raven, Trance, Metallica, Exciter, Exodus, and Megadeth. I could go on and on. Rogue Male is just great stuff for any 80's metal fan or someone interested in getting into 80's metal. These guys should have been huge, but I think their 2nd release just was not strong enough.

There is a more recent band out now called Dustsucker which seems to have the Rogue Male soul living inside of them. Anyone interested in Rogue Male should check out Dustsucker. If Rogue Male were playing today they would be Dustsucker.

5.0 out of 5 stars ROGUE MALE "FIRST VISIT", September 24, 2009
This review is from: First Visit (Audio CD)
I first heard "ALL OVER YOU" on WBCN in 1985, immediately went out and purchased the "First Visit" album. Upon my first listing to this record I was punched, slapped and slammed!! It is a no bs record, yes slight motorhead style, fast loud and in your face. Not trendy at all, they basically had their own sound with a little motorhead influence, which just states that if you have some motorhead in your music you are still doing your own thing. Just purchesed the cd from amazon about 6 months ago, my turntable broke about 10 years ago. Hearing this cd after a 10 year absence was like finding a pile of gold. I listen to it everyday, lifting weights to songs like "Devestation" "Crazy Motorcycle" "on the Line" All over you". It makes me lift cars over my head!! First visit is definitely one of the top 10 most powerful recordings in my music collection. Love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally on CD!!!, January 12, 2009

Rogue Male infiltrated my adolescence, with it's potent mix of Motorhead & raunch, around 1985.
Vocalist & visionary, Jim Lyttle, cultivated a band that crossbreeded street metal with gutter punk, and like peanut butter & chocolate, it worked!
Lyrically, the sexual bravado on display in gems like "All over you", make AC/DC's wordplay sound like Hemingway, but like the mighty Australians, Rogue Male is in on the joke.
Musically, the riffs come from all directions, like swarming bees from a kicked over hive.
The guitars are almost as fierce as the "Road warrior" personas of the band, itself.
Initially only available on vinyl & cassette, and out of print for what seemed like eternity, the Rogue's are finally getting the CD/Digi-pack deluxe treatment...with bonus tracks, no less!
These classy brits have never sounded better.
Recommended.

Man has it been a long time since the original one was released.I had the album back in 86 and loved it.Fast music think Motorhead (vocals) punk rock of sorts(music).I finally wore out the cassette I had picked up
from a friend in the early 90s.So it was just a matter of time before it
was out on cd.Still took at least 10 years.Songs like ALL OVER YOU are
just raunchy humor.Crazy Motorcycle was on a Music For Nations complilation record I had. That how I got into this band.If you dont like
Motorhead you wont like this one.Nothing serious, just good fun and humor...UP THE IRONS......
