4.0 out of 5 stars Searching for something fresh, new, but not over-pretentious hyped out "indie" artistry? Then, read on....., September 4, 2005
This review is from: First We Waited...Then It Started (Audio CD)
I must admit, after first listen to this record, I was not instantly sucked in, was actually a bit unsure about whether or not I dug it... However, it was not until a long car ride, I decided to pop it in and give it a better listen; that's when I realized it's potential. I suppose my initial reaction to the brief skimming of each track, was on a subconsious level, searching for that catchy pop element in the songs.. Yet, this record is actually an entirely different beast. It's hauntingly dark, yet beautiful, the album is filled with well orchestrated arrangements, and incredibly fragile, yet sincere performances. "Piano Song", the first track on the record, builds wonderfully into it's climactic and chaotic breakdown; complemented by the soaring falsetto of Jeremy Linzee.. The album continues that formula, and spirals into kaleodiscopic melee' of lush soundscapes and melodies; offset with a dynamic rhythm section.. This album is a great listen, not only is it very original and downright daring at times, it is also very deep and connective on a listener's level. It manages to pull it off without sounding pretentious, and is very listenable.. I recommend you buy this record, light a few candles, and let it sink in. I personally enjoyed this record for it's rich sound; it's gutsy and raw delivery, and modest and unpretentious aura. I look forward to future releases!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Potential, August 4, 2005

This review is from: First We Waited...Then It Started (Audio CD)
The past year has been truly brilliant for new artists coming out and stealing the spotlight. Unfortunately I am not too sure about any of these artists having strong staying power. I do however see great potential in the Summer Lawns. Normally I'm the kind of person who changes their playlist up a lot but I've been constantly returning to this album since I got it. I doubt this album will be a huge hit like The Killers' Hot Fuss but I do see strong staying power in the Summer Lawns. To me this album is a cross between Radiohead, Coldplay, and Jeff Buckley. If anyone wants to hear something a bit different give it a listen. Cheers.

5.0 out of 5 stars creepiness tinged with beauty..., October 7, 2005

I've never heard anything quite like Summer Lawns. The first track off of this album that I heard was "Jack the Ripper." It started out slow and melancholy, and then darkness suddenly rushed through the melody, making it an altogether stranger and creepier thing entirely. I think, in fact, the creepiest thing of all about that song, and several others off the album, is how beautiful they are despite their surreal and occasionally nightmarish lyrics. This music is like being drunk in the woods at dusk.
