3.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed plan for the first six weeks of school
This book provides exactly what it says it will. It gives you a week-by-week schedule for all elementary grade levels and the rationale behind doing each thing. This would be really helpful to have before the first week of your first year teaching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for new teachers, June 22, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: First Six Weeks of School,The (Strategies for Teachers) (Paperback)
This book is essential for new teachers like myself, who have no idea where to start when planning a new school year. It provides daily lesson outlines for the first 6 weeks of school. As well as the reasoning behind the authors'philosophies. I have learned how to structure my day to cullivate a community of learners. In turn I have faith that my first year will be successful, less stressful, and more productive than I had imagined. This is a great book for any teacher who wants to increase structure and promote community within the classroom

5.0 out of 5 stars Meaningful Book for Experienced or New Educationrs, July 14, 2006

I bought this book based on the positive reviews here and was deeply rewarded. This book lays out a clear method and philosophy towards building a caring and safe classroom. The book offers separate parts for the K-2, 3-4, and 5-6 self contained classroom. What was most remarkable to me about this book was the way it struck a balance between being a teaching "cookbook" and a straight book of philosophy. Definitely recommended for any new or even experienced educator in a self contained elementary school classroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars What would I have done without it?, June 17, 2007
By
Amanda "Life Artist" (Albuquerque, NM, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: First Six Weeks of School,The (Strategies for Teachers) (Paperback)
My first experience teaching on my own was to be thrown into a classroom on the fourth day of school as a long-term substitute. No time to plan. No materials. Bare walls. Not even any text books for the first 2+ weeks. I ordered this book overnight delivery. I cannot even imagine what I would have done without it. It saved my bacon. The strenght of this book is that it does not speak in generalities, leaving big gaps in how to implement its ideas, which the reader is expected to fill in with her own experience and know-how (of which I had none). Rather, I could literally go into my classroom with little in-class experience and virtually no materials and do a creditable job teaching.
If you are a teacher with an old-school aproach (grade on a curve, essentialist philosophy), you would not find this book useful. This book is more appealing to teachers wanting to create a community of learners, and who have constuctivist leanings.

The First Six Weeks of School is an excellent book for both beginning and seasoned elementary teachers. It always helps to reflect on the why of some of your teaching practices and helps you to see how you might more effectively begin the school year. Easy reading, good information!

I began using Morning Meeting [ASIN:1892989093 The Morning Meeting Book (Strategies for Teachers, 1)] as a part of my teacher education program last year and found it to be a great benefit for encouraging positive social interactions between my elementary students. This year, I began following and implementing The First Six Weeks of School's suggestions and my students LOVE it! They enjoy greeting each other, sharing and doing the activities. I have likewise seen a decrease in the amount of behavioral issues within my classroom. The program will work with your own ideas of discipline, rules and expectations and I have found it to be invaluable as I begin my teaching career. I would recommend The First Six Weeks of School to any teacher (new or experienced) who wants to encourage a positive, socially interactive classroom experience for their students.
