About the Author

Roger Priddy is the creator of over two hundred best selling books for young children including Wipe Clean ABC, First 100 Words, and Fuzzy Bee.

When he was at school he couldn’t decide between being a patisserie chef or going to art college. On the advice of his father he chose art college and trained as an illustrator before becoming a designer at Usborne Publishing.

Roger’s love for children’s early learning has led him to create some of the most successful children’s non-fiction books, first at Dorling Kindersley (My First Word Book, Incredible Cross Sections and My First Cook Book) before he set up Priddy Books with St. Martins Press in New York where several of his books have sold over a million copies each including My Big Animal Book and Happy Baby Words.

In total he has sold over 65 million books worldwide and his books have been translated into over 30 languages.

He says “It is always rewarding to see a child enjoying and learning something from one of our books, especially the babies when you think it could be the first book they have ever seen.

I am very lucky to have a career where you get to think up fun ways to teach a kid how to write their letters and learn their first words whilst finding out about Dinosaurs at the same time!”

Roger lives with his wife Zena in London and Cork, Ireland (when it’s not raining, which isn’t very often!) They have four children Sam, Rose, Alannah and Gabriel (and a dog called Wallace) who have given him most of his best ideas for his books. He still loves baking bread and cakes!

My daughter (22 months at the time of this review) has probably a good dozen Priddy books. Mostly they were sent by her grandma, who is convinced that we are raising the next Einstein. Priddy board books are well done and sturdy. They have brilliant colors and perfect for babies and young toddlers. It was also interesting to see which pictures attracted her attention. She was mostly interested in everything that moves, in food pictures and in faces. I don't think that these books have a long life of sustained interest, but they certainly played a role in early language acquisition.

My son (18 months) loves picture books right now so when it arrived larger, with larger photos, than I expected this was a good surprise.

However, with 14 pages of vehicles (planes, trains, trucks, tractors, boats, you-name-it) I would not recommend this book to anyone unless your child is obsessed with machines.

There are only two pages of "food and drinks" so the balance is really off. But apart from the mentioned 14 pages, the pictures are simple and clear, just as expected.

I found the title a little misleading with ("First" Words and Pictures). Some of the pictures are just down right weird. Some of the words are cockroach, forage harvester, armadillo, and SUV. Heck, I didn't even know what a forage harvester was. The quality of the book and its pictures are great. I would just recommend it for slightly older children, maybe 3 to 5.

my grandbabies LOVE this book...Dad or mom reads to them and they point things out and say qhat they are...and then go to the book themselves and pretend to read...again, saying what things are as they remember...fantastic enjoyment, fantastic education.

I was very pleased with this book. The bright pictures and real pictures made it very enjoyable to look at with my 18 month old grandaughter. It's oversize makes it easier to look at with a little one on your lap.
