5.0 out of 5 stars This was helpful for a Teen who needed it
I work as a therapist in a teen counseling program, and one teen girl has just been diagnosed with HCV. She's experienced all the common reactions: denial, grief, "This is a death sentence and God doesn't want me to be happy," and fear. I bought this book for her and she devoured it. Her entire affect changed, and now she's teaching US how to relate to her, how...

3.0 out of 5 stars The First Year-Hepatitis C
Although I think this is a good book to start with if you have recently been diagnosed, I find it lacking the depth I was looking for. It gives some great resources which is why I think it is a good book to start with, but at the same time, I would also suggest that you buy the following in addition to this. These are essential:"The Hepatitis C Helpbook"by Misha...

I work as a therapist in a teen counseling program, and one teen girl has just been diagnosed with HCV. She's experienced all the common reactions: denial, grief, "This is a death sentence and God doesn't want me to be happy," and fear. I bought this book for her and she devoured it. Her entire affect changed, and now she's teaching US how to relate to her, how to talk about this diagnosis, why certain things WE say are insensitive or incorrect (without knowing it), and what emtional and lifestyle changes she needs to make for health. This book alone reduced her fear in half, and made her feel confident rather than powerless.

5.0 out of 5 stars a compassionate and uplifting book, February 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The First Year--Hepatitis C: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (Paperback)
I've read a bunch of books on hep C. This one is certainly the most compassionate and uplifting. It also covers the widest range of topics and is the most helpful all around. It's written by two women who have hep C themselves. They talk about relationships, sex and self-image, as well as medical topics. I felt they really understood what I'd gone through and what I'm still going through. The book is called "an essential guide for the newly diagnosed," but it's really for everyone with hep C. I got diagnosed with hep C about 4 years ago. The shock subsides, but the fear and confusion don't go away. I've met so many other people who are desperately seeking information. I'm glad this book is out there. It's a great reference book too. I've checked out some of the websites in the back & looked into some of the herbs they discuss. Highly recommended!

Although I think this is a good book to start with if you have recently been diagnosed, I find it lacking the depth I was looking for. It gives some great resources which is why I think it is a good book to start with, but at the same time, I would also suggest that you buy the following in addition to this. These are essential:"The Hepatitis C Helpbook"by Misha Ruth Cohen OMD and Robert G.Gish MD, "The Liver Cleansing Diet" by Dr Sandra Cabot, "Herbs for Hepatitis C and the Liver" by Stephen Harrod Buhner, and see if you can find "Who Gets Sick; How Beliefs, Moods, and Thoughts affect your health" by Blair Justice. The treatments out there are scary and can hurt you more than help you, so if you don't feel like poisoning yourself with a biotherapy, this is where to start.

I picked up this book at the library. I have a friend who was recently diagnoed and wanted to learn more. The book was easy to read and understand. Tons of information on all aspects of Hepatitis C. I have given this book to my friend and they are very excited to read it. They have read alot about Hepatitis C and everything was bad news. This book will give you hope to live a healthy life.

This is a great book. It's easy to read and is written so that anyone can understand it. As I was recently diagnosed with Hep C I wanted to learn more about the disease. I learned so much from this book. Great for anyone with the disease or knows someone that has it.

Buy this book! Every person with hep C should own a copy. I got a lot out of Dolan's Hep C Handbook, but this one is more accessible & it's easier to find what you're looking for. Packed with information, a great reference!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Guide for Living, February 13, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The First Year--Hepatitis C: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (Paperback)
This is the first hep c book I have seen that gives guidelines for what to do about my drinking and drug use. The chapter called Prioritzing Lifestyle Changes was exactly what I needed. I also related to the stories that the people in the book told and the list of questions that people with hep C ask. I could have written them myself. These authors really know what it's like to get diagnosed with hep C and they introduce you to all the different treatments out there. the stories made me feel better about interferon, but interferon is not your only choice. There are lots of alternative treatments that are less harsh on your body, and they can make the interferon easier too.

This book saved mee from a serious depression. Great advice for dealing with emotional issues as well as medical ones. I recommended this book to everyone in my support group. They loved it too. I also gave it to a friend who had a different chronic illness, and he got a lot out of it. You will too.
It's life-affirming.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Helpful Hep Book on the Web, February 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The First Year--Hepatitis C: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (Paperback)
This is the most helpful hepatitis C book on the web. The information is easy to read yet not dumbed down. This is the only book that speaks frankly to my needs, including sex and dating issues and what do I do now that I can't drink! I love this book and am buying it for all my friends with hep C.
