4.0 out of 5 stars good if you can get it together
I love this rail. It's the perfe ct size and easy to put up and down. Yes, it is very difficult to get together because the fabric is so taut that you have little room to manuever. It was very easy to attach to the bed and adjust once it was up. I'm looking to buy another one for our shore house.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good bed rail, January 27, 2009

I didn't think it was that difficult to put together. In fact, I assembled it just looking at the big picture on the box, and not the instruction book. The fabric was a bit snug and it took some effort to pull it taut but the end result is a nice firm screen that will not give much if your child pushes on it.

The bottom "clips" were pretty self-explanatory, and as long as they are adjusted to fit the mattress, the entire assembly is very sturdy. Unfortunately, they will not fit a crib mattress, as the clips cannot be retracted narrow enough to fit a crib mattress. I really think they should have designed the bed rail to fit a crib mattress, twin and full, not twin, full and queen. I don't think many kids that require a bed rail sleep on a queen mattress anyway. That's the only reason I took a star off.

The rail swings 180' down from the up position (provided the bedframe is of sufficient height) and that should make it easy during the day, as my daughter loves to climb up and down her crib. All in all, a very nice product that is worth $30 I paid for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am pleased!, April 21, 2008

I had read up a lot about bed rails. Still I wasn't sure which was safe and was not confident about buying any one in particular. So, I finally decided to buy a used "First Years FoldDown Bedrail" just to try out.

This was used on two children before I bought it for my toddler. But feel it still is as good as new and working very well. In fact I transitioned my baby from crib to twin bed with this rail, at 14 mo of age. He is doing very well till date. I just make sure to get to him as soon as I hear him wake on the baby-monitor. He even gets off the bed safely by himself if needed.

I have had this for 4 mo now. Looks like I will keep it till he grows out of rails.

Just bought this from a local Target tonight. Instructions are mediocre, and could be improved - for instance, why is it necessary to insert the rails under the mattress then shorten the rails by a peg? Unless your mattress is made of granite, you could easily get the right width by measuring, then wedging the mattress to the bottom of the rails. The way the instructions are stated you have to simultaneously hold your mattress up far enough to push in the peg with a screwdriver while also constricting the rail to fit into the next closest peg - not easy at all if you're installing without someone to help.

Also, the pegs themselves are of poor quality - one on our assembly would not slide back through the hole until I pulled it out of the rod, straightened, and reinserted it. If I'd left it as it was the assembly could shift with weight, negating the entire reason I purchased the product.

Finally, getting the fabric assembly around the rails was very difficult. The structure must be taut, which explains some of the difficulty - you don't want your child to get caught in loose fabric - but I'm not sure why this part doesn't come assembled from the manufacturer.

Haven't tested the assembled product yet. If there are flaws during use I'll post again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not suitable for king-single or slat bed, September 1, 2011
This review is from: The First Years FoldDown Single Bedrail (Baby Product)
We bought this bedrail in a box branded as "Compass" but once opened found that it had "First Years" logos all over it. We were hoping to use it for a King Single size bed, but it doesn't fit. I didn't find this out until well into the assembly/installation instructions. They could easily add some more holes to make it fit. I was ready to drill some extra holes myself but then found out it also isn't suitable for a slat bed, so back to the shop it went. If we had known it was "First Years" we could have found online reviews and known that it wasn't suitable. It would be nice if they had clearer information on the packaging about what types of beds it is and isn't suitable for.

Assembly was painful, they could easily pre-assemble parts of it without significantly increasing the package size.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible!, June 4, 2011
This review is from: The First Years FoldDown Single Bedrail (Baby Product)
Says on box that it works with platform beds...oh really?! Yeah it might install to a platform bed, but it doesnt tell you until you get to the VERY end of the instructions that it wont fold down for a platform bed! Add to that how hard they are to build and install and that if you want to actually make you kids bed youre out of luck! Lift the mattress and the thing falls off or you instead cant tuck in the fitted sheets or anything for that matter! what a terrible product!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not tall enough!, March 2, 2011
This review is from: The First Years FoldDown Single Bedrail (Baby Product)
This only comes up 2 inches above the mattress! My daughter could easily roll over it and onto the floor. They fail to mention that it is only compatible with thin mattresses. If you have a decent mattress or pillow top, this product will not work.....it's just not tall enough and there is no way to adjust it for the height of the mattress. Waste of money!

5.0 out of 5 stars bedrail, December 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The First Years FoldDown Single Bedrail (Baby Product)
This really worked great for my mom. I got it for after she fell out of bed a couple of times. You would think an 83 year old would have learned how to sleep in a bed by that age. Well after I put this on her bed she never fell out of bed again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, May 22, 2007
This review is from: The First Years FoldDown Single Bedrail (Baby Product)
This is a great bedrail. My daughter loves to sleep only in the corners of the bed and this bedrail is sturdy enough to hold her in!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected, December 30, 2006
This review is from: The First Years FoldDown Single Bedrail (Baby Product)
This rail is NOT easy to assemble; it is frustrating, as the directions are poor and the parts do not always fit together perfectly. On top of that, nothing on the box told me it would require assembly! The supporting rails extend underneath the entire width of the mattress, which makes it very cumbersome to install, remove, store, or transport. Once you get through the unclear instructions and actually get it put together, and then have someone help you install the awkwardly long supporting rails, it does function well. However, I decided to go back to my old-style rail.
