3.0 out of 5 stars Recommended with reservations, September 24, 2001
This review is from: Born Brave (Firstborn Sons) (Silhouette Intimate Moments, 1106) (Harlequin Romantic Suspense) (Paperback)
She can fight; she can shoot; she can walk like a princess. So when Laurie Lewis lands the opportunity to impersonate the beloved Montebellan princess, she feels prepared for the terrorists' plot of kidnapping. She's not quite so prepared to handle her bodyguard. All her life Laurie has fought to be taken seriously. When bodyguard ex-cop Hawk Stone underestimates her abilities, she proves her point. But she can't deny the passion his green eyes ignite.

Wounded by tragic losses, Hawk had retreated to the desert to nurse his wounds until his father convinces him to accept this assignment. They plan to set a trap for the terrorists, using Laurie as bait as she travel across the United States impersonating the Montebellan princess on a publicity tour. Hawk believes Laurie to be too young and too naive to handle this dangerous assignment. But since she's a dead ringer for the princess, and well versed in all the areas of intelligence that would effect this assignment. Now, despite his efforts to keep their relationship strictly business, Hawk finds his imagination captured by this sultry seductress turned princess.

I was forced to suspend my disbelief on several points in order to enjoy this romance. First, the premise of BORN BRAVE strikes me as a bit odd, because I have difficulty imagining the FBI hiring an ex-cop, regardless of whose son he is, to guard an FBI agent. Second, our heroine wears divine designer clothing that reveals her figure to perfection, but she impersonates a woman who is pregnant. Despite these misgivings, however, BORN BRAVE does bring together some wonderful fantasy elements. A man of Native American descent with green eyes certainly lights my fire. In addition, this heroine gives as well as she takes, demonstrating physical strength as well as intelligence. Therefore, BORN BRAVE comes recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great entry to the Firstborn Sons series, January 4, 2003
This review is from: Born Brave (Firstborn Sons) (Silhouette Intimate Moments, 1106) (Harlequin Romantic Suspense) (Paperback)
Laurie Lewis has always wanted to prove herself to her FBI colleagues. She gets that opportunity when she is asked to impersonate a Montbellan princess. She bears a striking resemblance to the royal and has the confidence and talent to make the situation work.

James'Hawk' Stone is an ex-cop that is brought in for the assignment. He is to portray a royal bodyguard.

When Hawk and Laurie meet, sparks immediately fly. They are hard pressed to find a balance between work and their warring feelings for each other.

All the while, sinister forces plot to kidnap the pregnant princess. Can Laurie and Hawk make it work?

I am new to Ruth Wind's work but will most assuredly check out some of her other books. She crafted Laurie and Hawk incredibly well and they fit perfectly into the existing Firstborn Sons framework.

A few plot holes kept this from being a 4.5-5 star book for me. Laurie has a large scar on her arm, and this was not addressed. How can Laurie be mistaken for the princess with a large scar?

Still, this was a fantastic book! I will look for more of Ms. Wind's books in the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasure to Read......., September 29, 2001

This review is from: Born Brave (Firstborn Sons) (Silhouette Intimate Moments, 1106) (Harlequin Romantic Suspense) (Paperback)
I waited a long time for a new book from this author and she didn't disappoint me with this story... It's a sweet love story bewteen two people who shouldn't..couldn't fall on love on the job but they do anyway. The anticipation between Laurie and Hawk is intense and even though the reader knows there must be a happy ending in this type of book, it's a well written ending.
This book is in a series called 'Firstborn Sons' and I was compelled to find the others in the series to see how they match up. If this is your first Ruth Wind book you surely won't be disappointed. Happy reading.
