If you want a cheap filter for your small pond then this is your guy. Only drawback is the lack of hosing which is more expensive then you might think. Also remember that it must be mounted above the waterline as you need gravity for the outflow. And don't forget that your pump has to pump the water up to that spot so be sure it can handle it.

This product works very well in filtering my 125 gal koi pond which includes plants such as: fairy moss, chocolate mint and of course koi. The brush catches the large pieces and I clean the brush very week to keep the flow of water at maxiumum. The compact bio filter is easy to install, upkeep, and hide at the pond. I liked these so well, it was my second purchase of this filter. I was running another one on my larger 300 gal tank.

The Fish Mate Bio Pond filter, I am sure, is excellent for ponds. However, i use mine for large aquariums. These are great filters, providing superb mechanical and biological filtration... keeping the water crystal-clear. One could easily pay around a $1,000 for an aquarium wet/dry filter... but these babies are amazingly inexpensive (yet they perform just as well)! I use ViaAqua water pumps for mine... these pumps are very quiet and trouble-free. Unlike canister filters for large aquariums, these are easily accessed for easy filter maintenance. These are rugged, very dependable filters; they really get the job done. Mine rest directly on top of my aquariums, to the side (either on the top 1/4 inch cover glass or directly on top of the acrylic tank's top); and they are not too massive as to be unsightly. If you are getting these for ponds, the ones with UV lights will eliminate algae. Since I've obtained these, my water has been crystal clear and much more pleasant to look at.

We purchased two of these filters and accompanying bubblers when they were on sale. There was no way we could find them at a store for the price we paid, even with shipping. We installed both of them in our pond at different levels, and both are functioning well. Good buy!

I don't like sticking my arms into frigid water in early spring to pull out a filter unit for cleaning. This makes the job of filter maintenance so much easier. I also had a UV version. Easy to set up and work with. Highly recommended!

I utilize these for my large indoor aquariums! They are excellent for this purpose. Unlike most outside canister filters (which are positioned at the bottom of an aquarium and are, therefore, very difficult to periodically clean), these are easily accessible from the their top lid. The only requirement is that they must be positioned above or on top of the aquarium. Unlike with canister filters, which are not easily accessible (underneath the aquarium, involving spillage) and which have untold water pressure (which can cause rapid leaks in the hosing), these have relatively mild pressure, which is a lot less precarious. I use ViaAqua water pumps with mine, which work really well. Some of the smaller ViaAqua pumps use less wattage, but still crank out a lot of water per hour. I purchase tubing and clamps from a local large home improvement center. This smaller Fish Mate works great for 125 gallon aquariums. I use a larger version of Fish Mate for a 300 gallon acrylic tank. Both types keep the water crystal clear! You would be paying hundreds of dollars more for similar filters made especially for aquariums! I'm sure that they are great for outdoor ponds. They work flawlessly! (I use the kind without the light for my aquariums.)

I use this external filter on a very small fish (300 gal) fish pond. It is a mechanical filter with bio media in one side. It does a very nice job keeping the pond clean when used with a UV clarifier.

I bought this as a temporary resolve for my pond until my new filter on back order came in....this filter packs a punch for the price and keeps my pond crystal clean along with my UV filter (reccomended) easy to clean...my only complaint is that you have to hang it over the pond unless you want to attach 2 more hoses with clamps.
