5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book to Share With Your Child
My son got this book for his 3rd birthday, and it quickly became both his and my favorite. The story is a cute one -- a little fish named Tiddler tells elaborate stories about why he's late to school every day. Then one day he is caught in a fisherman's net and then lost in the ocean. Then he hears someone telling one of his tall tales, and he traces his own story back...

2.0 out of 5 stars Expected Better
My wife and I are big fans of Julia Donaldson and have all her books with a couple of exceptions, so we expected Fish Who Cried Wolf to be up the the high standard she has set for herself. Unfortunately, this was a big disappointment. First, let me tell you what we liked; Axel Scheffler's illustrations are spectacular, and one of his best for a Julia Donaldson book. In...

My son got this book for his 3rd birthday, and it quickly became both his and my favorite. The story is a cute one -- a little fish named Tiddler tells elaborate stories about why he's late to school every day. Then one day he is caught in a fisherman's net and then lost in the ocean. Then he hears someone telling one of his tall tales, and he traces his own story back home.

The book rhymes and has repeating text, so even the smallest kid can "read along." The pictures are gorgeous, imaginative and full of details for little eyes to notice. The story is fun for kids and really very touching for adults. Put a child on your lap and read this with them . . . over and over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another lovely book for you AND the kids to read, November 24, 2007
This review is from: Tiddler (Hardcover)
Julia Donaldson manages to write compelling rhymes which are easily read aloud and enjoyed by Adults and children. In this great fun book Tiddler is a small fish in a school with Miss Skate - but he is always late and always with a big excuse. Unfortunately one day there really IS a problem, a man with a net.

Axel Sheffler gets to let his wonderful illustrations run riot for the underwater illustrations. His rich pcitures are really compelling and great fun detail for the kids to pick up. I don't think any book with beat Room on the Broom (another Donaldson/Sheffler book) however it is wonderful to have others. They are fun to read and share

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny story of an unusual talent., July 11, 2008
This review is from: The Fish Who Cried Wolf (Hardcover)
Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's THE FISH WHO CRIED WOLF tells of the smallest ocean fish who tells the tallest tales to explain his tardiness - until one day he really is caught by a fisherman. Can he use his storytelling abilities to escape? Hilarious fish drawings add personality and zest to the funny story of an unusual talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars HE FISH WHO CIED WOLF, July 10, 2009

This review is from: The Fish Who Cried Wolf (Hardcover)
A friends daughter introduced me to Julia Donaldson about 10 years ago. She loved them and I bought the books for my grandchildren who also adore them. The repetative text is wonderful for small children and this purchase was for the 4 year old son of another friend. I think we have all Julia's books and all are firm favourites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your kids will love this book!, October 21, 2008

This review is from: The Fish Who Cried Wolf (Hardcover)
Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler quickly became my 3 year old twin boys' favorite author/illustrator team with wonderful books like The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, The Snail and the Whale, Charlie Cook's Favorite Book, Where's My Mom, and The Spiffiest Giant in Town. I even bought a set of these books for my 5 year old nephew because he loved them and asked for copies of his own. The Fish Who Cried Wolf definitely does not disappoint and is currently at the top of the Most Requested Books List in our home. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is engaging for kids as well as adults. I can read this story again and again and my boys never tire of hearing it as well as the other books created by this fabulous team of Donaldson and Scheffler. Definitely buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tiddler never cried wolf, October 4, 2011
This review is from: The Fish Who Cried Wolf (Hardcover)
I love this story, and so does my four-year-old. However it is sold in England simply as "Tiddler". I feel that renaming it as "The Fish Who Cried Wolf" for the US market really does it a disservice. This is clear from the reviews by those expecting morals from the story that were neither intended nor implied in its original format. I see it as a celebration of creativity and the often distracted and nonconformist behaviours of those who are very creative. Tiddler is not caught out because of his exaggerations, as this new title implies. He is caught out because he is daydreaming, and he is saved by the spectacular and memorable nature of his exaggerations. HUGE difference.

Julia Donaldson does it again. My kids love this book. The rhyming and overall storytelling are great. The illustrations add to the overall effect. Will have to buy another because the first one we have has been read by the kids so often.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute story, fantastic illustrations, message a bit lost in translation, October 9, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Fish Who Cried Wolf (Hardcover)
We recently got this book. While it is a cute story and the pictures are adorable, I think the message of the "boy who cried wolf" is a bit lost in this iteration. I had seen the book at the Monterey Aquarium but my husband didn't want to make our luggage weigh any more than it already did so I wrote down the title/author and ordered it via Amazon instead (better price!). I was really hoping for my 3 yr old to get the message of the "boy who cried wolf" to know that he should not fuss and cry unless it is really urgent or else it loses meaning... but I don't think this is the book to deliver that message. Regardless, we still enjoy it and I have tried to explain the message to him but I think it is too lost in the story for him to get. Still a fun, cute book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Expected Better, August 27, 2010

This review is from: The Fish Who Cried Wolf (Hardcover)
My wife and I are big fans of Julia Donaldson and have all her books with a couple of exceptions, so we expected Fish Who Cried Wolf to be up the the high standard she has set for herself. Unfortunately, this was a big disappointment. First, let me tell you what we liked; Axel Scheffler's illustrations are spectacular, and one of his best for a Julia Donaldson book. In this case however, she has let his art go to waste. What concerned us as parents was the flawed concept/storyline. The main character is a fish who is always late for school and makes up stories (lies) about his tardiness- hardly the habits we want to teach. If you are looking for an alternative, try the Gruffalo books, Room on a Broom and Charlie Cook, to name a few (I would give these 5 stars, BTW). I gave this book two stars, but only because of the artwork. Zero for the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute story, rhyming is not great, November 5, 2008
By

This review is from: The Fish Who Cried Wolf (Hardcover)
I think that this story is really cute but I don't think it was executed very well. The rhyming is a little off in that it seems that the words that actually rhyme are too far apart so you don't realize that it rhymes. Other than the rhyming, again it's a cute story, it's nicely illustrated, and my 18 month old son likes me reading it to him which is why I gave it 4 stars. I just don't like reading this book as much as I do some of the others that this author and illustrator have published.
