Product Description

Fisher Chef's Naturals Black Walnuts comes in a 2 ounce pack. As the oldest-known tree food eaten by man, walnuts are used today more than any other nut in America’s home-cooked recipes and restaurant dishes. Originating in ancient Persia about 7, 000 B. C., walnuts were first traded along the Mediterranean by English merchant ships. This fact may be the reason for the misleading name English Walnuts, since walnuts were never produced in England commercially. Today California produces 70 percent of the world’s walnuts, thanks to some Franciscan fathers from Mexico and Spain who introduced the trees to the area in the late 1700s. At John B. Sanfilippo and Son, Inc. (JBSS), parent company of the Fisher brand, we pride ourselves on knowing everything there is to know about nuts. When it comes to smarter snacking, better baking and great cooking, JBSS and our Fisher brand are your natural choice for nuts you can feel good about. Scientific evidence suggests that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachio nuts and walnuts, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.

These are absolutely delicious. You get a half cup of walnut pieces in each bag and that much easily has more flavor than a cup of English walnuts. These nuts are clean and without much nut powder. I use them right out of the package and haven't found a bit of shell yet. Use them sparingly, about half as much as pecans or English walnuts in a recipe and that will give you plenty of flavor.

They are hideously expensive now, but, back when I first purchased them they were only $12.48 for 6 packages. If you know anything about black walnuts you know that getting the nutmeats out of the shell is very difficult. When I was a kid, we had a black walnut tree in the yard of one of the places we lived. We would put the walnuts on the driveway and whack them with a hammer until we could dig the nutmeats out with little nutpicks. Hard work but worth it to get enough for a tasty Waldorf salad, or white cake with ground nuts in the icing. I love them best in chocolate chip cookies. Yummy!
