For a little Octonauts fan, this is a great idea. My 4-year-old daughter was thrilled to receive it, she loves playing that the Octonauts are her imaginary friends, so this toy inspired a lot of fun pretend play. She was excited to make and receive "phone calls" on it (she is more familiar with phones than compasses, and it has recorded voices of the Octonauts that play when you press buttons, so we call it her Octonauts phone). But the second night we had it, I was surprised when she seemed really concerned about what to do with the toy at bedtime. She told me the Octonauts would call and wake her up when she was sleeping. I thought she was just being paranoid, but she insisted she wanted to hide it inside a closed box in her closet. She continued hiding it in the box every night. One night I discovered why--she wasn't just paranoid. I woke up in the middle of the night to a scratchy "phone call" from Captain Barnacles. The toy had been left in my bedroom. Even though no buttons had been pushed for hours, it spontaneously woke up and played some of the recorded messages. Awful! I can't believe they designed it with no on/off switch, and a functionality to have it wake up periodically and make noises! The wake-up feature could be cute to have your child think the Octonauts are calling, but it should have a limit of turning itself off after an hour or so of not being used--or an on/off switch, please! My daughter is now completely scared of the toy (I can't blame her, it would be so terrifying at that age to be woken up in the middle of the night from scratchy voices coming from a toy in your closet!) and never plays with it. Terrible design!

This is a brilliant toy; love the design, the phrases, the sturdiness. But it won't SHUT UP! The randomly talks at all hours with no provocation. We had it in a box in our bedroom while we were waiting for my son's birthday and it would randomly wake up and yell at us in the middle of the night. In fact, my son found it before his birthday because he was in the room when it started shouting Ahoy! If it had an on/off switch it would be perfect. I think I will take the battery out and let them use their imagination.

We got this over a week ago and my daughter LOVES it but at 5:45 this morning we were awoken to whales hounds and Quazi, Barnacles, and Peso shouting. I thought my husband had changed the alarm on his phone... Nope it was the compas going off on its own. I buried it under pillows and it stopped... For two min then started again. The only way to get it to stop was unscrew the back. (Mind you the compas was closed shut and nothing was touching it to set it off). A few hours and cups of coffee later I put the batteries back in and screwed it on and it started going again. It sounded like the Octopod was under siege by a whale!!! I want to give this 5 stars but sadly because of this feature it will only be one

I don't usually write reviews, but after reading the others here, I have to say that we haven't had any of those problems! This is one of my kids' favorite toys, and so far it has held up perfectly to four months of daily play by rambunctious 1 & 3 yr old boys. All the buttons work, and have always worked. It says tons of different things, and the sounds are all very clear. No, there's no way to turn it off, but ours has never once gone off by itself?? We definitely have annoying toys that do that, but this isn't one of them! Not sure if others here got a bad batch, but we love our octo-compass!

We got this toy a few years ago. Our boys loved playing with it and pretending they were having adventures with the Octonauts. Unfortunately, the Octo Compass likes to initiate adventures in the middle of the night, scaring whichever poor child had accidentally left it in their room after playing with it. It happened multiple times and is quite annoying.

Bottom line: it's a fun toy for a little Octonauts fan, but do NOT leave it in a child's room at night, nor be surprised if you hear it coming from a toybox when it hasn't been touched for hours. You can't say you weren't warned. :-)

I really don't love any toy that makes noise, but this toy keeps getting played with, so it was worth the money I spent on it. It basically just plays back sound clips from the TV show and has a "compass" that kids can twirl around. On a scale from 1 to Furby, this toy rates a 2 on the annoyance scale.

We don't really get a lot of excitement around here. We are pretty introverted, and we don't really enjoy a lot of noise. At all. My daughter and I usually agree that silence is golden.

However, my quiet daughter does LOVE the Octonauts. She loves the technology of the Octopods, the radar, and the communication methods that the Octonauts use. She loves all of that. She enjoys all of the various sea creatures and she is very interested in protecting and preserving the ocean. We spend a lot of time by the ocean and the Octonauts show really has changed her view of how the world works. Not bad for a child's program!

So obviously, I try to keep her interested through the Octonauts toys and things. She has responded very positively to this. The various toys and charts they come with really make her interested in reading, because she is not the type that constantly wants to ask for help and what not. She wants to do things by herself. For the help with reading alone, I think these Octonauts toys are great for children. My daughter was only four when she started loving the Octonauts, and she has really shown much more interest in learning how to read and do things on her own since watching this show. I am telling you this because I honestly feel a little guilty giving anything affiliated with the show less than five stars.

But as I mentioned, our home is a quiet one. Until now.

Enter the Octo Compass.

This toy is absolutely possessed. It talks by itself. And not only that, it KNOWS when to speak up. I am so paranoid about this toy. I have taken it apart several times to see if there is anyway to stop this madness. The first time I took it apart, the batteries were in the wrong way. I thought to myself: "How is this working with no batteries?
