Kid pleaser!, January 2, 2007
This review is from: Fisher-Price Backyardigans Sing-Along Music Maker (Toy)
I agree, it is loud and you hear the same songs over and over but isn't that every kids' toy? My only complaint is that it should have more songs. Otherwise, it seems to be very enjoyable to toddlers.

First, the obligatory 'how to fix this loud toy' thing- just put some Scotch tape over the speaker. Bam, problem solved. Otherwise, this is a fantastic music toy for any child that loves the Backyardigans or just loves grooving to music. What's really great about this toy is that the songs are all from the show- not some generic songs or something that sounds like it belongs in another show. You're getting 5 different styles of music here, each one having two different tracks, and each one tells you what style of music you're listening to. I marked the educational value rating up a little just for this, because most music toys don't say what style it is, or make an effort to set them apart. Each track plays for a good amount of time- not too long to the point where it'll drive you crazy.
There's also a microphone that barely works. It has to be pretty much right against your mouth to pick up anything, and more than likely it'll sound fuzzy when it comes out of the speaker. It's kind of an add-on feature to this toy since it's mostly a toy stereo and has 5 different songs, but I guess it's something extra your kids can play with.
The Music Maker also get some crazy battery life, even on the ones that come with it. We didn't have to change the batteries for over 8 months, and my daughter played with this sucker on a regular basis. And if you have kids that love to throw or drop everything, the Music Maker can handle damage without a problem. Ours got smashed by heavy toys and kept playing just fine.
Of all the music toys I've seen over the last 2 years, this one still seems to be the best for your buck (provided you get it at around what it originally cost). There are a ton of toys like this that play the music until you physically turn it off, and it's just one track looped over and over. Luckily, this isn't one of those. If you're looking for a good music toy with a good shelf life, look no further than this little beauty.

loud but that can be fixed, August 29, 2008
This review is from: Fisher-Price Backyardigans Sing-Along Music Maker (Toy)
I just bought this item for an upcoming trip where we will be driving from NM to WI then to PA and then back to NM, with a 22-month old. This is one of the many new toys and toy-like items I am gathering for my "bag of tricks" to keep him happy during the long trip. I can't wait to see his face when he first starts playing with it. I am sure he is going to love it, and we've never even seen the Backyardingans! I do agree that the unit is very loud, but face it folks, that can be remedied with a simple piece of duck-tape over the speaker! Most problems come with an easy fix if you just take the time to think about it.
