5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for baby - not obnoxious for parents
This toy was in anstant hit with my 8-month old. The blocks inside are unusual shapes and can be spun like a top, which fascinates her. (FYI - they're interchangable with some other Fisher-Price toys.) The best part, as far as I'm concerned, is the happy tune the snail plays. The song is up-beat enough for her to dance to (and she does - no matter where she is or what...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for the younger end of the age range
My 16 month old son receieved this toy for Christmas and he has played with it very little. I think he is too old for it. I found the music annoying so I took the batteries out since there is no way to turn it off. I don't believe the toy will be that durable since the plastic is not very thick and will be easily cracked by being stepped on. My son also has the Fisher...

This toy was in anstant hit with my 8-month old. The blocks inside are unusual shapes and can be spun like a top, which fascinates her. (FYI - they're interchangable with some other Fisher-Price toys.) The best part, as far as I'm concerned, is the happy tune the snail plays. The song is up-beat enough for her to dance to (and she does - no matter where she is or what she's doing - she stops and bops to the tune), yet simple and jazzy enough to keep parents from wanting to throw it out the window on the umpteenth playing. So many 'musical' toys try to amuse the child by overwhelming them with techno beats or whooping screeches. This little guy delights my daughter with his simple tasteful tune, and his little song is a welcome addition to our home.

I bought this toy for my son when he was 6 months old. At first he just knew how to push the button and make the music play. Now he is 10 months old and loves putting the shaped blocks in and out of the container. He also is learning how things "work" and loves to open and shut the lid. This is one of his favorites and it holds his attention for quite a long time. GREAT TOY!

I don't believe the toy will be that durable since the plastic is not very thick and will be easily cracked by being stepped on. My son also has the Fisher Price Baby's First Blocks which he plays with a lot more and I think is a lot more versatile and durable toy. My son loves to carry the cylinder around and put various things in it and step on it. If you are looking for a sorting toy I would get the Fisher Price Baby's First Blocks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Musical Snail, November 13, 2001

This was a present for my 11 month old girl. She can easily close and open the lid. She claps and giggles at the music. Even my 4 year old plays with this. He likes to stack the shapes. Seems durable so far. My only problem is while picking up toys after the kids go to bed you can easily trigger the music and there is no way to stop it. But otherwise, we love this toy!

Bought this when my grandson was 5 months and he's loved it! The goofy music is catchy and he loves pushing the snail head to make it play.(Now he dances to the music.) He loves the snail face and chooses this from the toy basket every time. At 9 1/2 months he's exploring the pieces, which he can hold easily and build/knock down, and he loves the hinged top. He's beginning to fill/dump and I imagine sorting functions will be next. It's a versatile, grow with me toy and well made in the Fisher Price tradition.

My son likes this toy and is learning to sort the shapes with it. However, we took out the battery because it would play music constantly - there was no On/Off switch!

we got this for our son when he was 4 months old. At first all he did was make it play the music and hit the shell part of it. now at almost 11 months he plays w/ this toy every day. We especially like the way you can use the base for a stacker. He loves to stack the shapes and then knock them over. The music was so obnoxious that we had to remove the batteries so it wouldn't play music anymore. But it is still one of his favorites

4.0 out of 5 stars Hold on to your sanity - There's no OFF switch!, March 17, 2001

This is a cute toy, and my son loves the hinged door on the back of the shell. But the shell has to go it alone. We confiscated the base because the music switch has a hair trigger and no way to turn it off. It even bothered the UPS driver who delivered it (it was "singing" in the box!!)

4.0 out of 5 stars A Little Annoying!, November 12, 2001

The same short tune plays over and over, even when you don't want it to---the button for the music is on the bottom part of the toy, so even if the top is bumped it starts up. No off button and no volume. The shape sorter is okay, but it doesn't offer "normal" shapes, so there isn't the learning of square, circle, star, triangle, etc. Overall my daughter (18m) enjoys it, but it doesn't get played with too often.

The colors, shapes, and toy in general are great. There is no on/off switch to this toy (my fault for not noticing) so the slightest bump of it sets off the music-one tune only! The music needs a few different tunes and and on/off switch.
