My 2.5 yr old boy uses this. He uses it so much I am tired running around after him. My wife and I take shifts. All the neighborhood kids run alongside him and try to catch bubbles - which are actually pretty low to the ground. They are excited anyway. As he passes one area he picks up another set of kids all running behind him.
As a push toy it's tops. The gears running off the rear tires are linked to a circular disk with holes in it near the bottom right side. A reservoir of bubble soap is on the bottom. Air flowing through the holes makes the bubble go while the disk rotates and refreshes the film on the holes. What is important is that there is enough resistance from the gears so that he has to really push and he is in no danger of falling down suddenly. This is the first push toy we have let him use.
As a bubble machine it's great when everything is right. A long stream of bubbles flows out the side and to the back trailing him when he pushes it. He has to really move to get the bubbles to flow and he loves it. It's not quite running but it's close. Problems are when he tips Mater the solution flows out to the ground. Bummer... Sometimes it's hard to get it started to blow bubbles but he doesn't mind. He knows it will work sooner or later.
It actually works better in grass because it's best to push forward and down to get the gears to work the best. He uses it both on grass and concrete and it's no big deal. I have never seen him get so much exercise and it was a complete surprise to me that he has done so much running with it. He knows where the bottle for the fluid is and when I come with a top up he immediatly lifts it out and patiently waits for me to take the cap off and fill the bottle.

We bought this toy this weekend for my 2 year old son to replace a cheap bubble mower he had used in the backyard that had broken. He loves Mater and was so excited when we saw this. We got it home and I found it very easy to snap together and he loved just pushing it around the living room. However, when we took it outside to put bubbles in it, we found that the "cap" that is supposed to hold the bubble jar in place doesn't snap down. So as soon as I had it assembled and gave it to my son, he immediately tried to pull the bubble bottle out of the reservoir and got bubbles all over his hands. Also, we found that because Mater doesn't use a motor or batteries, the bubbles only come out if he is on a hard flat surface and pushed several feet (like up and down a driveway)and very quickly. Unfortunately our back patio doesn't really allow for enough area to really get Mater going and he doesn't seem to work well in the grass. Also because my son is younger - he struggles to get enough speed to get the bubbles out. My son still enjoys pushing him around, even without the bubbles, but for $30 - I really expected more from this toy.

We purchased this toy for our nephew's 3rd birthday. As soon as he tore open the wrapping paper, he wanted it out of the box to play with it. The assembly instructions are very easy to follow. Make sure you read the operation instructions as well. A key note: In order to prime the bubble blower mechanism, once you put the filled bottle into the hole, you need to push the bottle down for 10 - 15 seconds. If you don't perform this step, it will take quite a while of use for the bubbles to start blowing. This step needs to be performed before use, each time it sits for a while and when you refill the bubble solution.

After we assembled and primed Mater, my nephew and 2 year old son were both off to the races! This toy worked great on almost every surface. They played with it on the carpet in our back patio, the concrete on our driveway, and on the grass in the front lawn. No matter the surface Mater kept blowing his bubbles! (Mater worked OK on our tile flooring but not at his best). The bubbles were of quality too! Our nephew would push Mater and our son was right on his heels to pop all of the bubbles Mater blew out. The little bottle of solution lasted for about an hour before it ran out, which was longer than I expected due to the size of the bottle. Overall this is a great toy and we have decided to purchase 2 more from Amazon, 1 for a friend's son's birthday and 1 for our son's birthday.

The only other note I can make is to make sure you purchase a quality refill solution. The cheap watered down bubble solutions that you get at Wal-Mart and the like don't work that great in this toy. We refilled Mater with some bubbles my nephew received from another guest that they purchased at Wal-Mart and the bubbles were barely coming out and more often than not, popping as soon as they left the blower mechanism on the side of the toy.

Hope this all helps and for those of you that purchase this toy, have fun! I know we did and continue to do so!

I have owned this toy for 24 hours and this is just not what I was expecting at all. The toy is really cute visually. My son is in love with mater however it is nearly impossible to get these bubbles out of him. My younger son got it for his 3rd birthday and he cannot get this toy to produce bubbles at all, which makes for a total toddler melt down. My older sons (5 and 4) can get it to make the bubbles but they have to be at a light sprint for quite some time to get the bubbles going. The other disappointing things is that one of the tires have already fallen off of him. I popped it back on but its just a little ridiculous that after only having it for hours it is already falling apart. Crappy toy. Taking it back if possible. This thing is not worth 30 dollars at all.
