I had to write a review for this after I read the first bad review. We love this toy! This is more for about age 4 or 5 because little ones will just scribble on it. Little ones do seem to like to watch the light show though. Turn off the lights to the room and just watch the light show. No the manual doesn't say to use toy this way but be creative :) But for learning to write letters age it is great. The lights are a perfect speed for child to follow and this saves paper while they practice, practice. My child hums to the music that is played while tracing and waits when done for the lights to go away to view what he wrote and is very proud of what he did. It has numbers and lowercase too which covers all. Yes the pretty pictures around the desk do nothing but they are so cute to look at! My child points to each one and says the letter and what word goes with it...all the way around. Now that teaches recognition and letter order. The table top looks like you can use erasable markers on, we haven't tried. the magna doodle screen is enough for us but you could also lay a piece of paper on top and trace the lights too and then show off your letters on paper. this toy is simple enough to not be overwhelming and teaches the Basics. No it doesn't tell the child if they wrote the letter right or not but my child can tell when the lights are gone if looks right and erases and starts over for perfection if not. Sometimes a child doesn't need someone or something telling them they did it wrong or try again...us grownups get sick of that if told :) When the lights are gone and they are proud of their letter or they would like to make it look better they can. Ask your child does that look like the letter "B" when they are done a few times while you are with them and point to the picture around the desk to compare...those words will echo back in their mind when they play alone with the desk. There is enough pretty letter pictures for them to look at and tell if looks correct. Plus we want to raise self motivated children and adults don't we... I think this toy is just right for a child who is ready to draw letters! We don't want the toy to do everything for our child we just want them to be guided and learn self confidence as they practice.

My four-year-old loved this toy at first, but he quickly got bored with it.

He will now only pick it up when challenged to write something or we coax him.

I think it is neat, and it's the most writing he has done anywhere.

This was a Christmas gift for a 3 year old. She is very interested in learning to write her letter and numbers. This allows her to copy and write her letters and numbers by herself. I think this toy will also be good for her 2 year old brother in a few months.
