2.0 out of 5 stars Good Idea but poor design
My 4 year old does like this train with the cool smokestack but the train design is poor. The smoke goes up and down as it moves which is neat. The train that is controlled by the remote is permanently attached to the first car of the train. The first car of the train does not lead the rest of the cars. Because of this, the first train often derails going down hills...

DURABLE FUN! If I had to describe this item in two words, it would be those. We have 4 children, but our two youngest are 2 and 3. I think, finally, someone has thought up of something that doesn't have "hundreds" of little pieces, small children of all ages can play with it and actually love it. I am a busy mom of 4 who stays home now to care for my mom full time as well. This toy is so quick to put together, I take it apart at night and put it back together in the morning and it takes maybe 5 mins. out of my busy day. My 3 yr. makes different track designs thoughout the days and my 2 yr. feels like he's actually the one making the train go on, so he feels rewarded. You can see his little gears working when he watches how it's put together. With that alone, it's educational

I don't understand some people giving this item a "poor design" or "not durable" ratings. Our train set has been sat on, stepped on (remember I have 4 kids), pushed over. This track stays together well an does not fall apart easily. You actually have to "unsnap" the pieces.

I give this item a perfect 10! It's the only reason I've gotten other GeoTrax stuff... so I can add to it.

Awesome guys! Bravo!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great toy!!!, October 25, 2009

This is a great toy. My two year old loves it. He is able to work the remote, and likes to pull the train around the track. It isn't cheap, but considering its durability, its fairly priced.

Pros: extremely durable. exapandable/compatible with other geotrax, configurable, the hill and tunnel are cool. Simple enough for a two year old.

Cons: the track pieces are too hard for a two year old to snap together, its a little loud (with no volume). If it came with a couple other figures that would be cool considering there is a "station". Two more figures and a $50 price tag and this would be a five star review.

Battery-life is good but not great.

We have no problem with derailing. It will only derail if the hill is immediately followed by a curve (simple physics, it get going pretty fast down the hill), just put a straightaway first after the hill and it will never derail.

All in all: do not hesitate to buy, it really is a pretty cool toy, though it isn't perfect.

My 4 year old does like this train with the cool smokestack but the train design is poor. The smoke goes up and down as it moves which is neat. The train that is controlled by the remote is permanently attached to the first car of the train. The first car of the train does not lead the rest of the cars. Because of this, the first train often derails going down hills and gets my son frustrated. It's made just like the "Hauler and Big Rob," Team which we didn't keep because it derails. Not sure why they make the trains this way, it just frustrates my son. Expensive too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding train for those little train lovers, January 29, 2010

My 2 1/2 year old grandson LOVES trains, so I purchased this for him for Christmas. He has played for hours with this set. First thing every morning it's, "Let's play Steamer," and you will hear that repeated several times a day. If he isn't playing with it, he is watching the DVD that came with it. The DVD is 4 different stories showing the different trains that are part of the GeoTrax team. This DVD has given "Steamer" a personality to my grandson. He re-enacts scenes when he is playing with the set. He gasps every time the "ghost train" shows up and is worried when the trains get stuck in the mud.

My grandson also enjoys his push Thomas trains. This set does have push trains available. It will meet the needs of younger children with the push trains, but at 2 1/2, he has had no trouble getting it back on track (or should I say, Trax!). Another grandparent gave him a Lionel train for children 2 1/2 and up. He enjoys and plays with the Timbertown Railway more. I don't know if it is the DVD that made the difference there, or if it is easier for him to operate. I am looking forward to expanding his set, although my daughter may object!

ETA: The train and remote quit working, Battery changes in both did nothing. My grandson used it as a push train and eventually went back to just playing with Thomas. My daughter bought the airport for him for his 3rd birthday. The day they set it up, he dropped the remote and it quit working. She then saw in the instructions that it said DO NOT DROP. Children in this age range (2-7) are going to drop things. Adults drop things. This is way too fragile for a young child and was a big disappointment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun toy but why just for boys?, July 25, 2011

My 3 yr old daughter loves trains so we go this for her for her birthday. So far the whole family is having fun with it and we can't wait to get more sets and trains. She also loved the DVD that came with it. But watching I noticed that every train "team" is made up of a train and the conductor, all male. I then looked up all the additional train sets, and all the conductors are men. It's very disappointing that this day in age a company like Fisher-Price would have better marketing vision. I hesitate to support such an outlook, but my daughter loves the train. Maybe we'll find some female figures from other toys and make them honorary train conductors!

Got this for Christmas 2010. My three year old has been asking for Geotrax for awhile. I was dissapointed when we opened the box and the remote didn't work. I called up the company and there was a new remote at my house in less than a week. No charge and no hassle.(they didn't make me send them the defective one or anything) I was VERY pleased with costumer service, and my three year old is happy with his train:)

My son, who just turned 4, had been asking for a "remote controlled" train set for a long time. We were hesistant to get him a real model train, fearing it would not survive the normal wear and tear he and his younger sister would give it. This train set is very sturdy. It is also very easy to use. For the first few days he used it every day. We were a little concerned that he would lose interest in it after a while and that is what has happened. But I think if we decide to add on to it with additional track and buildings, it will hold his interest more. It does tend to eat up the batteries rather quickly. I recommend rechargeables. It takes 6 AAA batteries total.

My son of almost 4 wanted this from Santa. He has played with it 3 times but seems to be done with it because he has battery operated and electric trains that run much faster. It is easy to assemble and very durable. Excellent choice for a first train for child that enjoys trains.

We wouldn't have thought to purchase this toy as our 2 yo son wasn't showing a lot of interest in trains yet (just cars) but it was a gift. He loves it. This is what got him to love trains. It's good for fine motor skills and developmental skills because he has to get the train on the tracks and he puts the little cube bundle of "logs" in the crane's grip to drop into the train car, etc. I think it was focusing on playing with this train set that got our guy without much of an attention span to actually sit and pay attention to one thing for a longer period of time. And now that has extended to other toys and his books, etc. Best of all it's very durable. My son carries the train around and drops it and bangs it around. Don't hesitate to purchase this. We don't have a problem with derailing. You need to set the tracks up the way that's suggested and aim the train in the direction suggested for each set-up.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still fun, but lesser quality than older sets, December 25, 2009

We have been collecting Geotrax for 3 years now. I'd agree with those who says this is geared toward a younger child. Some of the bigger sets are more interesting for the older kids. Geotrax in general are great, they get a lot of entertainment just designing the tracks. For that reason, i am more disappointed with this set than any other one we have ever bought. The quality of the tracks and buildings are much cheaper than that of the other sets we bought previous years. The tracks no longer have the spring-loaded tabs that made joining them together so easy. Instead they now have little plastic tabs that have a friction fit. They are harder to join and line up properly. Maybe not a problem for kids new to Geotrax, but my son has a harder time putting them together. For me, i just feel like i still pay a hefty price, but get cheaper quality parts. The same was true for the Geotrax Cars Mega set, which was even more expensive.

It's still fun for my kids and works with all their old sets. I hope not all of the sets will be of this cheaper quality, or we may be at the end of Geotrax collecting years.
