4.0 out of 5 stars a FUN creative toy, FUN for creative kids!
We were looking for a substitute of the likes of the Video Now or some the other mindless electronic toys on the X-Mas must-have lists. It isn't much cheaper than those others, but we felt that the options for creativity were greater with the PIXTER.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pixter Pitiful
I bought the first gen. Pixter in 2004 for my daughters, it didn't have the updated video features but you could play games on it pretty good. After a few months, it went dead, everytime you turned it on and use the pen the screen would freeze. So I figured ok, this thing has just gone bad.
In 2005 I purchased the new and improved Pixter (in pink) for my girls,...

We were looking for a substitute of the likes of the Video Now or some the other mindless electronic toys on the X-Mas must-have lists. It isn't much cheaper than those others, but we felt that the options for creativity were greater with the PIXTER.
Like the other systems there are built-in functions: a tetris-like game, a drawing page, word games, dot-to-dot pages, and more. The stylus tool is fairly easy to use and the drawing functions have many stamps, backgrounds and other methods to enhance artwork. The PIXTER will save selected works, also there are many accessories to extend PIXTER interest, additional cartridges some with licensed products like Sponge-Bob, Barbie, Walking with Dinosaurs, Teen Titans, each allowing real-time clips and editing of TV scenes ($20 each). One of the most interesting accessories is the digital camera for even more personalized creative play.

My 8 and 5 year old were hooked by the PIXTER. The only problem is the batteries, some systems come with chargers or AC ports, the PIXTER DOES NOT. We bought rechargable AAs for the toy.

Also many stores do not carry assessories for the system, but TOYS R US has the digital camera for the set (@$[...]) which is really great, allowing users to modify & play with photos of their own!

I bought the first gen. Pixter in 2004 for my daughters, it didn't have the updated video features but you could play games on it pretty good. After a few months, it went dead, everytime you turned it on and use the pen the screen would freeze. So I figured ok, this thing has just gone bad.
In 2005 I purchased the new and improved Pixter (in pink) for my girls, with the new video feature, and hoped maybe just maybe this one would stick around for a while. Needless to say within two months, the game was blinking on and off and not playing at all. I wrote to Mattel and let them know of their faulty product and they told me to send it to them, I did and they sent it right back, still a broken mess. I'd never buy another Pixter again.

Leapfrog has a much better handheld video game Leapster and their games are far more educational and practical than Pixter.

My twin 7-y-olds LOVE their Pixters. They spend hours on them. Better in the car than even DVD players, and far more interactive. The only thing I don't like is that all of the accessories I have tried to buy ONLY work on the older Pixter models (called Color Pixter, I believe). The travel case is too small and the digital camera doesn't work either. Now, the camera did say "requires color pixter systems to work." I took that to mean they had to have color and not b/w, not that it had to be an older system. The travel case didn't say anything but "pixter" on it. So, while I've had to return a few accessories, the kids LOVE the toys. So, would still recommend. Just buy accessories with caution!

2.0 out of 5 stars good idea, bad product, August 13, 2006

We had it for two weeks then it broke. The screen flashes on and off for no reason. Nothing happened to it--it just started doing that. Very weird. No online support available from fisher price for this system either. I bought several games that cannot be played now. The kids liked it while it lasted though. We also have a Leapster which has lasted us eight months so far. My boys like it much better too!! So if you're going to buy a learning system I would recommend the leapster.

First toy I have bought that the kids have kept playing with it for more than 1 week. They love it, can't wait to buy more cartridges. I recommend it. My girls are 8 yrs old and they did not have any learning curve, picked it up and just started playing...

This is a great toy! Can find great educational games to use with it too. We find that it is a super thing to have when you are traveling and when you are at the doctors office and places like that. A must have and the kids love it! We have twins and have bought a Pixter and a Leapster and they trade out.

1.0 out of 5 stars Faulty design leads to great frustration, August 1, 2007
= Durability:2.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars

My son loves his Pixter and has since he received it for his 2nd birthday. He has 5 different cartridges and has a few favorite activities on each one that he will play over and over. I have seen certain skills sharpen because of his time spent with Pixter, especially matching, letter recognition and hand/eye coordination.

That said, the Pixter is very flawed in design. The pen "sticks" in the hole rather than snaps in and out nicely like the Leapster's pen, it's huge and it's heavy, and my biggest complaint is the way they designed the cartridge slot. It's right on the top of the unit, and any little bump it may receive will cause the game to restart or to just start blinking sporadically. My 2-year-old son likes the big chunky cartridges and likes to put them in and take them out by himself, but I would much rather the cartridge be harder for him to take out in exchange for more reliable performance.

Our Pixter is only 4 months old and it's been behaving strangely since the first month we've had it. I've called Fisher Price several times, wondering what their plans are for the system because nobody sells the games anymore, and if they do, they're on clearance. I haven't seen a system on the shelves.. well, ever. I bought mine new on eBay. FP keeps saying they are redesigning the system and they aren't discontinuing the games, yet the games are becoming harder and harder to find.

I'm going to save my time and money tracking down the elusive Pixter games (most of which seem to be subpar in quality anyway) and buy my son a Leapster for his 3rd birthday. It seems far superior to Pixter in almost every way. I love FP and our house is full of FP toys, this one just happens to be a dud. Save your money!

My nephew has everything... I had no idea what to get him for his 5th birthday. My sister-in-law never heard of the Pixter Multi-Media system, but I saw it had good reviews and decided to buy it for him. It is his favorite present out of about 40 things he got at his birthday party. It fits in his back pack and he takes it with him everywhere! He just loves it! I also got him the Pixter Rom Monster Shop which he also thinks is great.

I bought the Pixter multimedia for my 4-year-old son's Christmas as an "extra" gift from Santa that wasn't on his wish list. We have spent hours playing with it together and separately. He quickly learned to do some of the basic drawing and simple games on his own and enjoys my input for some of the more complex activities (i.e., paint by number). It is great for car rides! There is some difficulty finding games for it in stores, but look on ebay for lots of options. I fully expect this to be a toy gift that keeps on giving for months or years to come!Pixter Multi-Media System: Black

When I got the pixter for Christmas my eye was shining bright. I thought the pixter was the wrong gift my mother got me . Until when I started playing the pixter I relized it was a very valuable gift . I thought to myself " I'm going to keep the pixter for a very long time like next year and I belive I would ." If you buy this gift for you or your family they won't ever get off of it . I t's really great . The games are cool and it even comes with a portable backpack and 2 free games. The games are so challenging . I hope you buy it .
