We bought this pirate ship in October 2007, and haven't had any of the problems with it coming apart that some earlier reviewers mentioned. (Perhaps the 2007 version is improved?) We're actually very happy with this toy--it is very well designed, with just the right balance between functionality and durability. There are lots of things to do (raise/lower the sails, the anchor, fire the canons three different ways, etc.), and everything works well and holds up to the normal amount of abuse that a four-year-old and his 2-year-old brother can dish out. One of our kids' favorite toys, and one of ours as well.

My 4 year old got this for his birthday. He hasn't been one to play with toys much. He prefers video games, so to keep those kind of things to a minimum, I am looking for toys to keep his interest. He has played with this nearly every day for a month, and still seems excited about it. He likes the cannons that really shoot, the sails that open and close and the figures. His older siblings enjoy playing with him too.
It encourages open ended play and imagination which is great!

My 3 year old daughter really loves pirates (think Wiggle's Captain Feathersword). When she got this for her 3rd birthday, I was not happy - she was supposed to be getting the Little Tykes version. She absolutly loves it, as does my 5 year old son, and our 40ish year old neighbors and their teenage girls! The only downside is there are lots of small accessories that can easily be lost. Other than that, this is really neat!

I bought this for my son's 4th birthday this year. While he really enjoys playing with it, he get frustrated that it falls apart VERY easily. My husband finally glued the hull of the ship together (leaving everything else to be able to pull apart) and that did the trick. This is a good step up from the Little People pirate ship.

My son got this last Christmas(2006), and we were all excited. But within days we found the ship kept coming apart even with very little force applied while he was playing. It soon docked to the side of the room and made a voyage every once-in-a-while when my son saw something pirate like, but then was left for us to clean up and repair.
I don't know if the 2007 version is better, but it certainly looks better with a lot more features. If the ship's hull comes apart in various pieces, I would hesitate to buy it. Try it out in the store first if you can or don't be afraid to return it if your child gets frustrated after a week(keep in mind your store's return policy) If it was fixed for 2007, it seems like it would be worth buying. It only gets 3 stars for fun because of the frustration the 2006 version causes

Very few of my 3 1/2 year old sons toys do I envision worthy and durable enough to get passed down to his children.....but this one has a lot of neat functions as the other reviewers noted, and in my opinion is very solid and durable.....and requires NO BATTERIES!!! The only complaint is that the box did not highlight all the cool things it does, nor did it come with directions, so I am just finding out bit by bit all the little things it can do (i.e. the pirates armor is removable, the cannon balls can launch one at a time or all three together out either side of the ship doors). I wish I had a 3, 4, or 5 year old boy to buy for this holiday....this is the toy I would buy....quality toy, great price, and a lot of fun.

PROS: My son, who is 4 1/2 years old likes the toy very well. He will play with it for long stretches (about 30 - 45 minutes) at a time. It has many parts he can move; cannons, anchor, sails, plank, open and close the the hold of the ship. Characters each have a sword or scimitar. The turtle is big. Shp is a nice large size. So far it seems very durable, have not had problems with it falling apart.
CONS: 1.The hold where the cannons are stowed, will not close if one of the figures in "manning the cannons" and my son would get frustrated. I resolved by telling my son that in ships the hold must remain open when people are in. He seemed satisfied. 2. the cannon balls look extremely dangerous to me, so I just threw them away. They are marble sized balls with a long extension. They are meant to shoot out of the cannons. I have younger kids and these cannon balls look too much like lolly-pops. 3. Sometimes the figures are a little unstable if not pushed in well on the specially designed platforms and they they fall off, but eventually he learned to push them in well.

I got this for my son's 3rd birthday because he likes pirates. He and his 5 yr old sister have had so much fun playing with it. I love all the neat things that it does: shooting cannons, pirates that sword fight on the back (aft?) of the ship, the sails go up and down, the anchor can be dropped and raised, and the flags, rails, emblems can all be rearranged so it holds their attention for a long time. The only drawback is keeping all the pieces together- my daughter likes to scavange parts to play with her little pet shop pets. It has been very durable and we haven't had any problem with it. Another bonus is that when William usually plays pirates he grabs his sword and starts the attack. When he plays pirate with this ship the attack is kept in his imagination, where it belongs. I would buy it again.
