Spike Jr. is a great alternative!
Spike, the Ultimate Dinosaur was too large and much more expensive, a bit impractical for a 3 year old! I was disappointed that his mouth does NOT move as he roars, but at least it can be opened or closed manually. I think it is a great first dinosaur, and I hope it alleviates the constant begging for the larger one on display in the store!

Both my kids 21 months son and 3 1/2 year old daughter love this dinosaur. He walks and roars. My son carries him around and hugs and kisses him. My daughter puts food in a bowl for him and takes him to bed at night and covers him up. My son wants toys like his big sister but needs durable toys. The button on his back is easy to work. Honestly I'd love a few more of these dinosaurs running around my house.

My son got this for Christmas, and he *LOVES* it. I can't tell you how often I've been bitten/had my arm chewed off by this vicious dinosaur, what terror we've had in the kitchen as it rampages through, nor how often my son's little baby needed a diaper changed and a bottle. True, the mouth doesn't open on its own. Big freakin' deal. My son doesn't care - he's happy with his dinosaur, and that's the bottom line.

My girl and boys (two sets of twins age 3.5 and 4.5) have left this fella out in the weather for weeks, thrown him into the pond, tossed him at one another, stomped on him, jumped with him on their trampoline, and fed him an assortment of fruits and crackers. He still works like new. THAT, to a mom of three boys, is what makes a great toy and a great value.

My friend's son wanted this toy for Christmas. I found it to be pretty basic - It wasn't a toy I was fascinated with but he enjoyed it well enough. It is very durable - walks better on hardwood than on the carpet but it does walk on the carpet.

We love this toy so much we bought one to keep at the grandparents house! My son has been sleeping with his Spike Jr. for about a year now...he loves it and it has definitely stood up to "volcanoes", "hurricanes", "earthquakes", etc. ... all sorts of natural disasters that a little one can imagine.

Moves with ease, love the "sweet scary" ROAR he makes and a great size for a little ones aged 2-5 in my opinion.

Makes a great gift and I would recommend to others.

My girls are happy with Spike Jr overall. He is very cute, and easy for the kids to activate, and they like to play with him a lot. He makes fun sounds, and the walking is a great feature. I just didnt give it 5 stars because he doesnt walk very well (if at all), on carpeting. And he could use some more sounds. Also, his mouth opens, but it doesnt seem like it ever opens when his electronics are activated. I am not sure if that is because I just havent seen it happen or it just isnt part of the programming. But otherwise, I recommend this toy. I don't regret buying it.

We have both Spike Ultra and Spike Jr. They are a fantastic pair. I think Spike Jr makes great sounds. I was a tad bit disappointed that his mouth does not move, but came to terms with that fairly quickly. My son didn't mention that at all. Great toy for a 4-year-old. Spike Ultra can grab Spike Jr by the tail in his mouth and lift him. It's so neat. It's also so neat to see them roaring side by side.

My son got this toy as a gift for his 3rd birthday and instantly fell in love with it. It's really cute, the dinosaur walks and roars with a push of the button by his tail, but he's not scary at all so I think it would make a great gift even for younger children. My 7 1/2 month old loves it too and it's great to get him to learn to crawl. When the dinosaur walks away all he wants to do is get him back. Great toy overall!

I agree that older kids might not find this toy that exciting. But it is great for younger kids. My 1 1/2 year old nephew loves it. And his 6 month old twin brothers are entertained by it as well.
