I received this soother as a gift for my son when he was just a few months old and we still use it every day (he's now almost two years old.) It is simply fantatastic. The things I like best about it include the volume control, the duration control (up to 15 minutes of music and lights and I couldn't find any other product to top it), the range of sounds (classical music, classical lullabies, and nature sounds), and the ability to change the display to more complex visual images as your baby grows. I just can't say enough about this item and felt I needed to address some of the complaints listed among these reviews:

The lights aren't bright enough- The lights are plenty bright in a dark room or at night. Yes, if you use it when put your child down for a nap during the day, you probably will not be able to see the projection. If the lights were any brighter, I would be concerned it would keep my child up rather than soothing him to sleep.

Images are upside down- The plastic card that is included will allow you to flip the images over if you are concerned, but really, your baby will not notice if it is projecting on the ceiling.

The images don't move- I found with other mobiles and soothers that project and move, that the moving parts were loud and distracting. With this product, the lights come on and off with different colors in time with the music. I think that's plenty interaction for baby to sleep.

The images are blurry- I don't understand this complaint. I've used this soother in several different rooms at different heights, in different houses and never had a problem. The unit does have a tilt option to adjust the view.

It's a boring show- This product is for babies to soothe them to sleep. If you over-stimulate babies, they don't sleep - simple as that.

No plug in option- I found that even when using this soother multiple times during nap times during the day, and at night, and in the middle of the night when my baby awoke, every single day, I only changed the batteries twice a year. The lack of a plug only gives me flexibility to move it wherever I want. I'd rather have it this way.

Net-net, I think this is the best soother with light show available, and my baby and I love it. I recommend it highly and give it as a gift whenever possible.

Since my daughter's been able to stand in her crib, her sleep patterns are not as consistent as they used to be. I heard that these musical/projection soothers can help.
However, do no buy this one. The images of this projection are horribly blurry unless you have it about two feet from the cieling. I actually laughed when I turned it on and saw how fuzzy the images were. I tested it in a dark room with a white cieling as they recommend.
Saying this, there is one really nice feature to this soother that I haven't found in others yet, which is you can play the soother with music on or music off. There is also a volume control on the music which is nice too.
The music in itself is calming and you options, like natural sounds, classical, etc...
Saying this, I returned the product since the light show was terrible. I wouldn't even call it a light show, more like blotches of muted light on the cieling.
After reading great reviews, I'm going to try the Tomy Light Bright. Hopefully that'll be better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for us!, September 2, 2008

After switching from crib to big girl bed, my daughter stopped going to sleep on her own. But after getting this, we put it on as part of our nighttime routine and tell her that when the music and lights shut off- mommy leaves and she goes to sleep. She totally went for it! First we started at 15 minutes on the timer, now I'm out of there in 5. I love the different timer options and I think that the light show is quite adequate for us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, May 14, 2009
This review is from: Fisher-Price Select-a-Show Soother (Baby Product)
I bought this because I could not find the turtle soother that I had originally wanted, but have been very pleased. I use it for all of my child's naps and at night. Some of the complaints about the product have to do with the light show. It is only visible at night in a dark room and the pictures can be blurry. However, it is for infants who do not see particularly well in the first place. My daughter does not seem to miss the light show, anyway. She only really cares about the music. The good things about the product are the three volume settings, the choice of music, and the fact that it is portable. You can also change the amount of time the music plays, from 5, 10, to 15 minutes. I have only had to change the batteries once since I bought it several months ago. This has worked out well for us after my daughter became too old for the mobile.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not all that great, April 3, 2009

I was looking for something that could take the place of a mobile for my baby's cradle/crib/etc and thought this might fit the bill. My biggest complaints:

- It won't stay on longer than 15 minutes (by design)
- It isn't very bright, the designs only show if the room is almost pitch black
- There isn't any motion, just three shapes that fade in and out

I can't complain too much though, the price was certainly right.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest, but my son likes it, March 5, 2009
This review is from: Fisher-Price Select-a-Show Soother (Baby Product)
I actually bought this about 2 years ago when my son was approx. 4 months old. He's now 2-1/2 and he still likes it.

Here is what I've found:

Depending on the distance the projector is from its 'screen', it may or may not be fuzzy. The tilting option can help with that issue.

I prefer the battery operation instead of plugging it in. I've used it for both naps and bedtime, and I've probably changed the batteries maybe 4 times. The places that I found convenient to set the projector never had a plug-in close by. There were times as well that my son wanted to play with it in his crib because he wanted to push the buttons. I definitely would not have wanted an electric cord then.

The music isn't that great, but my son likes it and that's what matters.

We actually have 2 of these. We visit my parents quite often so instead of trying to remember to bring the one from home, we just leave one there. What was kind of odd is that the set up for the two of them are different. When you push one of the selections on one of them, it always starts with the same piece of music or nature sound. With the other, it alternates the beginning song.

What was disappointing with both of them is that within days after purchasing, each of them projected from just two light panels instead of all three. I bought them from two separate stores so I thought that was really weird.

My husband also admits that when he's home alone he will play it to put him to sleep as well.

I received this toy as a gift for my 3 month old, and I have been very pleased with it. It has vey nice, good quality ambient noise and good classical music selections. The light projections are pretty neat too, and I like that it comes with three different slides to use as your baby's eyesight improves. True each slide only projects three images, but if you're trying to soothe your baby to sleep do you really want some kind of fantastical light show? The key word for this toy is "soothe" and I think it does just that. There are also the nice versatility features of three-level volume control, adjustable timer (5, 10, or 15 minutes), and the ability to use just the lights, lights and sound, or just sound. My only minor quibbles are that it has to be totally dark for the images to really show up. Even turning on the nightlight in our son's room will pretty much wash out the images. Also, there is a slot in the back of the toy to hold the two slides you're not currently using, but one of them always falls out if we move the toy around too much. Could be just a defect with ours, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Saver!, December 9, 2011

This review is from: Fisher-Price Select-a-Show Soother (Baby Product)
I had been looking for a mobile when I read soothers are better and the music plays for a bit longer. My son (then 3 months), would refuse to sleep on his own when put to bed, I'd had to carry him until he fell asleep in my arms. The very first night I used this I knew I had bought a life saver. I didn't like the first two slides very much so I just went right ahead and skipped to the last one (clouds, bees and stars) and he was staring at ceiling as if in a trance while the music played softly (it has 3 volume settings). After a few months, he would push the buttons himself and lay in the crib, listening and looking at the lights. I love this product! It's been almost a year since I bought it and I still use it. My son's so used to it that when he hears it, he knows it's time to relax and go to sleep. The only negative thing I could think of is that the "nature sounds" are not very loud, very hard to hear (sometimes I thought the battery had died until I pressed another button). All in all, I would recommend this product to anyone and in fact, I'm buying a second for a friend who's having her first baby soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids love it, September 27, 2010
This review is from: Fisher-Price Select-a-Show Soother (Baby Product)
My kids love this things so much. They are 2 and 6. They have had to share a room for awhile and they listen to it and watch it every night before bed. Now they are close to getting their own rooms and I may have to get another one. It is very durable too. My 2 year old has lugged it around and dropped it a few times and it is no worse for the wear. We have had it since she was a baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars great music and light show projector, December 14, 2009
This review is from: Fisher-Price Select-a-Show Soother (Baby Product)
I love this projector. I bought this for my new born who is now 1 1/2 years old. She still loves it and falls asleep with it every night. She even enjoys using it during the day to walk around with it and hum the tunes. After I first purchased it my three year old (at that time) kept trying to steal it from her sister's room to play with it and repeatedly asked to have it in her room at night. My now four year old still likes to change the light selections and pick a song of her choice for her sister before going to bed.

The toy is extremely durable and I don't even remember changing the batteries but maybe once so far.

I love how the pictures move from one to the next. It comes with three slide shows; my favorite being the first stage slide show. It projects a large smile face, heart, checkered pattern...I can't remember if that is it or if there is one more, but it is great.

The music is very soothing. At night I usually turn on the nature sounds, but the music is nice as well. I like the time selection, music volume control, and the ability to sit this toy on a book shelf or table, and angle the projector toward the ceiling over the crib... all which makes this toy excellent.

I typically don't write these reviews as I am always on the go; however, this is a great toy and is really deserving of a great review. I have decided to purchase this as a gift for my new little nephew since my kids have enjoyed it so well.
