Tons of fun even if the pictures aren't great!,

This review is from: Fisher-Price Kid - Tough Digital Camera Blue [Amazon Frustration - Free Packaging] (Toy)
My son has gotten 3 full years of enjoyment out of this very durable camera (from 5 to 8 years old), and now his two-year-old little brother has just as much fun with it. The camera has survived drops, falls, throws, and every other sort of kid damage, and still works. The pictures are lousy - grainy, low resolution, and usually out of focus (it's a fixed-range lens, so if the subject is too close, as it often is with a kid behind the shutter, the picture comes out blurry). But that doesn't slow them down - the kids just love taking pictures, and I don't worry about them wasting film or breaking their camera. When we look at the pictures together, I give him suggestions on ways to improve his shots, and he likes to practice - and the pictures are getting better! Now he coaches his little brother for at least a half hour of quiet play at a time - ahh, sweet peace! Sometimes the pictures they take come out just adorable, and when I look at them all, it's like being given a gift to see the world through a child's eyes - even if it is low-res and fuzzy. This toy is definitely a winner in my book.

My two year old loves it,
This review is from: Fisher-Price Kid - Tough Digital Camera Blue [Amazon Frustration - Free Packaging] (Toy)
This turned out to be one of the best toy purchases I've made. My two year old son doesn't have a lot of interest in "toys"; instead he prefers the real (and often breakable) thing. Here we have the best of both worlds: a working digital camera that's stood up to the best my son can do. It's the most fun when there are two kids: they can run around taking pictures of each other going "Say cheese!" It's fun to look at the pictures and send them to the grandparents.
It almost goes without saying the picture quality is poor, however if you read the manual you can increase the quality pretty easily. Copying pictures off the camera is easy: just plug a USB cable into the camera and your computer (no extra software needed). Battery life has also proven to be good. I've had it about four months and only changed batteries once. The only minor complaint I have: the button to take pictures is on the front which is a little awkward for small hands.

Great purchase!!!,
This review is from: Fisher-Price Kid - Tough Digital Camera Blue [Amazon Frustration - Free Packaging] (Toy)
With a working flash, a double view finder, a larger (than the older version) display, easy to work controls to scroll, delete and turn on and off, it's approx. 60 picture internal memory, the durability and attractive look for a toddler; there's only one more thing that you could ask for and that's a bit better picture quality. The pros FAR outweigh the con. To me, it was just a bit pricey, but I think we have gotten what our money paid for! My 3 1/2 year old son LOVES this, and out of everything it has already become his favorite gift, the strap never leaving his wrist! He LOVES seeing his pictures, and taking pictures of everything, including little piggy-toes, the wall, or the dog's tail! LOL.
This is a big hit in our home.... Though where I bought my new version of this item, it was $[...], so shop around for a good price. :)

This camera was bought as a gift for a 4 year old. The great things about it are that it is durable, it has a dual eye view finder, and our son thinks it is a ton of fun. The negatives about this product are that the picture quality is VERY poor although that isn't really an issue for us - I didn't expect great picture quality at this price point anyway. The bigger problem is that it EATS through batteries FAST FAST FAST! You definitely want rechargeable batteries for this otherwise you will spend a bundle and your child will get frustrated quickly.

BEWARE of Malware infection!,

The camera itself is nothing short of awesome for our 3 year old. It takes acceptable pictures for his use, it seems indestructible and he absolutely loves it. The one thing that I just can't overlook, though, is that ours was infected with Malware (win32.rajump) and it attempted to infect our PC when we connected the USB cable. Win32.rajump is a worm that spreads through removable drives (this camera operates as a removable drive when connected to your PC) and opens a backdoor on your PC. This is totally unacceptable and down-right malicious in my mind. Thank goodness for Norton. I am wondering if this is a problem with the factory sealed models, also? It may just be a result of opting for the 'Frustration Free Packaging' option. Since it is taken from the factory packaging prior to shipping to you, there are then opportunities for someone to load malicious software. I just don't know where it was loaded (factory or after taken from factory packaging), but what I do know is that having a Malware Trojan loaded on this is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. The 1 star rating is due to the loaded Malware, not the camera itself (which is 5 star). Everyone that has connected this camera to their PC should perform a thorough scan to check for infection.

It's a toy, not a camera,

The important thing to realize about this product is that it's much more of a toy than it is a camera. It's built with plenty of rubber around the body to cushion the blow of repeated falls and also makes it easier to grip. The functions available are only the most basic possible. The lens has no zoom capability, there are virtually no settings to change, it's a true point and shoot. For children who want to carry a camera around and feel like they're taking pictures it's great.
Unfortunately, if your child is old enough to make even a passing effort at improving his photos, then this camera will not serve. The LCD is low resolution and fades badly in direct sunlight. The viewfinder is both badly distorted and shows only a small portion of the area that will be photographed. And the photos themselves are so grainy, poorly focused, and poorly exposed that it won't matter what your child does. Every picture will look awful because the camera simply isn't capable of doing better. In summary, this is a perfectly good gift for children that would enjoy playing with a camera. The price is reasonable and it's built to take a decent amount of punishment. As long as you are okay with photos that aren't worth looking at, let alone printing, you'll be happy with the purchase.

On our recent trip to Disney World, while we were waiting for the shuttle boat to the Magic Kingdom, my 4-year dropped his camera on the dock and it bounced into the lake. He was upset but we could really do nothing as we watched this camera float under the dock and disappear. 7 hours later we returned from the park, I spotted it floating about 100 yards down the shoreline. I convinced an employee to use a rental boat to fish it out of the water...I dried it, and tried it an hour later, it worked perfectly!!
The camera takes reasonable pictures for a 4 year old, and he has a great time taking pictures with it. For the price I think you get a very solid product that delivers! |
