4.0 out of 5 stars
Fun for all ages (with a little tweaking), October 10, 2007

I purchased this for my one and a half year old that loves the doodle pro type products. This looked like another fun, clean, way for her to play before she learns to not draw on the walls (like she did the other night at a restaurant...).
I had not noticed the age recommendations when I purchased this. I just figured she would be able to use it the same as the other magnet type drawing toys she loves. The box says 4+ which surprised me until I found you have to push a button on the pen while drawing (pushing the button on the pen keeps the light on). So I either have to wait for her to get a little older to use it, or I've thought about just putting an elastic around the pen to hold the button down.
So far it has been fun for me! I have played with it and used the stencils etc. It is very fun that they throw in 12 little stencil cards and each card has multiple stencils on it. Many themes, borders, animals, to play with. I like that if you hold the pen a little away from the board it draws lighter, like you are spray painting the board, or you can hold it on the board for a fine line. So you can draw and shade etc.
The only negative I can find about it (the only thing holding it back from five stars), is that the blinking lights along the top and on the pen never go off. I would like it more if they only flashed when you turned it on, or changed it from solid line to dotted line, etc. However, they stay on the entire time, it kind of bugged my eyes a little. Other than that, a very fun toy!!

Not much fun at all! Don't waste your money., November 24, 2007

We got this for our son's birthday. By far the most annoying and distracting attribute are the bright lights accross it that blink constantly no matter what setting it's on. You've got to hold the pen's button down to draw, and the lines are not that crisp. And you can't erase the design -- You've got to wait for it to fade (only about 3 minutes, but that's an eternity to a child).
Overall, good old markers/crayons and paper a much better investment.

Used for less than a minute, then it stopped working!, August 2, 2008

My daughter received this toy for her fourth birthday from a classmate. She was excited to use it, so we opened it once we got home from the party. It took a few minutes to understand how to use it. It is not intuitive. Once I read the instructions and understood what the dial settings meant and that I had to hold down the button on the pen, I started using it. I drew a couple of lines and then handed off the pen to my daughter. She drew a few lines (though it was difficult for her to hold down the button and draw at the same time) and then started to use the stencils. As soon as we started using the stencils, the laser stopped working. I thought it was a battery issue, so I replaced the batteries. It still did not work.
I went to Target to pick something up the day after the Light Sketcher broke and saw the product Light Sketcher and another FP product both shared a video demo display. Ironically, the video demo worked for the other FP product, but didn't work for the Light Sketcher!
I did not want to ask the classmate's mother for the receipt so I called Fisher Price. They told us we'd need to ship the product back to them (at our expense with insurance) and they'd send us a voucher or something to buy a new one. Having read the other reviews and just having a chance to try it for a minute, I don't think it's worth me paying shipping to get a replacement.
I have purchased many items from Fisher Price in the past and love their toys. This toy, however, is a piece of junk, and not what I would expect from Fisher Price. Buy something else and save yourself, your child and/or your gift recipient the frustration and disappointment.
