4.0 out of 5 stars Fun for all ages (with a little tweaking)

1.0 out of 5 stars Not much fun at all! Don't waste your money.
We got this for our son's birthday. By far the most annoying and distracting attribute are the bright lights accross it that blink constantly no matter what setting it's on. You've got to hold the pen's button down to draw, and the lines are not that crisp. And you can't erase the design -- You've got to wait for it to fade (only about 3 minutes, but that's an eternity...

I purchased this for my one and a half year old that loves the doodle pro type products. This looked like another fun, clean, way for her to play before she learns to not draw on the walls (like she did the other night at a restaurant...).

I had not noticed the age recommendations when I purchased this. I just figured she would be able to use it the same as the other magnet type drawing toys she loves. The box says 4+ which surprised me until I found you have to push a button on the pen while drawing (pushing the button on the pen keeps the light on). So I either have to wait for her to get a little older to use it, or I've thought about just putting an elastic around the pen to hold the button down.

So far it has been fun for me! I have played with it and used the stencils etc. It is very fun that they throw in 12 little stencil cards and each card has multiple stencils on it. Many themes, borders, animals, to play with. I like that if you hold the pen a little away from the board it draws lighter, like you are spray painting the board, or you can hold it on the board for a fine line. So you can draw and shade etc.
The only negative I can find about it (the only thing holding it back from five stars), is that the blinking lights along the top and on the pen never go off. I would like it more if they only flashed when you turned it on, or changed it from solid line to dotted line, etc. However, they stay on the entire time, it kind of bugged my eyes a little. Other than that, a very fun toy!!

Overall, good old markers/crayons and paper a much better investment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Used for less than a minute, then it stopped working!, August 2, 2008

My daughter received this toy for her fourth birthday from a classmate. She was excited to use it, so we opened it once we got home from the party. It took a few minutes to understand how to use it. It is not intuitive. Once I read the instructions and understood what the dial settings meant and that I had to hold down the button on the pen, I started using it. I drew a couple of lines and then handed off the pen to my daughter. She drew a few lines (though it was difficult for her to hold down the button and draw at the same time) and then started to use the stencils. As soon as we started using the stencils, the laser stopped working. I thought it was a battery issue, so I replaced the batteries. It still did not work.

I went to Target to pick something up the day after the Light Sketcher broke and saw the product Light Sketcher and another FP product both shared a video demo display. Ironically, the video demo worked for the other FP product, but didn't work for the Light Sketcher!

I did not want to ask the classmate's mother for the receipt so I called Fisher Price. They told us we'd need to ship the product back to them (at our expense with insurance) and they'd send us a voucher or something to buy a new one. Having read the other reviews and just having a chance to try it for a minute, I don't think it's worth me paying shipping to get a replacement.

I have purchased many items from Fisher Price in the past and love their toys. This toy, however, is a piece of junk, and not what I would expect from Fisher Price. Buy something else and save yourself, your child and/or your gift recipient the frustration and disappointment.

1.0 out of 5 stars HURTS YOUR EYES! Would NOT buy!, October 20, 2007
This review is from: Fisher Price Light Sketcher (Toy)
We got this for my son's birthday last week and I'm SO thankful I tried it out before letting him play with it. The light reflected off the white page and burned my eyes. I nly played with it for about 2 minutes and my eyes were watering, then they started to burn and I put it away. We took it back to the store and I've even contacted the maker about it. I would NOT give this toy to a child because they might not understand that the reason their eyes are watering is because of the toy.

Dont buy it. I got the kids both one for Xmas and one didnt work when it arrived. We changed the batteries and still didnt work. The second one barely works, same issue. Couldnt get my money back from Amazon because I had bought it in October for Xmas and it was past the 30 days so I wasted $60.

i have just bought this fisher price light sketches for my son because he loves to draw specially those got light. therefore, i bought one for him. but i was dissapointted by this product. It is not friendly to my son at all.... If you want to draw, you got to hold and press the pen button once you let go... you can't draw. even you draw already, the line is not clear and you can't erase. you got to wait for minutes for it to fake off... my son hate it.

Right out of the box...laser turned on, but you had to hold it in one spot for several seconds to get any kind of marking on the slate. 10 minutes later, the laser stopped working. Junk, junk, junk. The only reason I gave it one star is because I didn't have the option of giving negative stars. Again, I say, "JUNK"!

My daughter, 5, just received this as a birthday present- pretty dissapointed that she is not in control of the writing- you can't erase it when you choose(it fades very slowly) and on the flip side when working with stencils to create a scene or any indepth drawing that takes longer than a minute to create- it is faded before you can finish - let along admire it. She'll be much happier with the doodle pro she'll receive for Christmas. And yes the lights are annoying- and painful to sensitive eyes. They may be safe as the manufacturer claims but they sure don't feel safe!

Durable, but lights are very distracting & bright. My 5 year old son enjoys it, but gets frustrated because it is sometimes difficult to write on. I think the Doodle Pro is better.

My son received this as a 5th birthday present on Saturday. It's now Tuesday, and he brought his new favorite toy to daycare with him today. He started dragging it around by the pen and the toy was taken and put away where it couldn't be broken. I picked him up and the pen no longer lights up, even though the wires are still connected and whatnot. The main pad lights up, just not the light.

Bottom line: it's a piece of junk. Save your $25 and get a Magna Doodle.
