4.0 out of 5 stars fun, but more useful for older children
My daughter received this for her 1st birthday. She absolutely loves the music and the gushy feel of the board, but she can't press hard enough to make any design and the little toys are better for clinking together and making noise. I bought this for my 2 year old quadruplets..they played with it alot at first and then became tired with it fairly quickly. My daughter received this for her 1st birthday. She absolutely loves the music and the gushy feel of the board, but she can't press hard enough to make any design and the little toys are better for clinking together and making noise. She can press hard enough to make the music and she likes when we draw and then she smashes it with her hands. I think that she will really enjoy this more when she is older. If you are considering this toy for a child younger than one I would strongly advise you to wait until they are older. It is a good toy, but really for children a little older.
The toy is covered in a hardy plastic, but I wouldn't let them use it unsupervised. It seems like a pointy object could tear it and I would not like that mess. Also, the scroll eraser thing need a couple of moves to clear the screen and sometimes you have to do it with your own hand. Definitely too much for a 9 month old. I personally really get a kick out of the toy.

It was not easy to make pictures on the screen, and they had to push down with their fingers pretty hard. When trying to erase the screen so they could make a new picture, we had to slide it back and forth over and over again and still did not have the screen totally cleared. My older son has always had a magna doodle and I thought that this would be good for the younger ones but after seeing how much my kids didn't enjoy it, I ended up throwing it away and buying them a small magna doodle as well.

...Great concept, but poorly executed. I wish I had checked...online before picking this up at my local [store].

The screen requires too much pressure for little fingers to draw anything on their own, but fortunately my son has figured out how to use the "pen" that comes with it to create some strokes on it.

The easel is definitely the worst "feature" of the toy, since it will not support anywhere near the amount of pressure a little one would like to exert on it.

I'd return it, buy my son like the music and does play with the shape sorter a bit...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for older children!!, April 1, 2002

I bought this for my 1 year old nephew for his birthday! I, myself, have a 3 year old and 5 year old. While, my nephew enjoys the music right now and really can't put to use the rest of it, my children loved it! I had to remind them, that the toy was not theirs. We kept it lying flat, didn't use the easle. It occupied them for a long time! They would press the musical note and when the music would stop, it was the other's turn. It taught them the concept of taking turns and sharing. They really enjoyed 'drawing' and squishing the 'paint' around. And, of course, I enjoyed clean-up later, as there was no clean-up. While it's rated for younger children, I feel that it's more appropriate for older children. Of course, I'd cut the age off at 5, as my son is quite intelligent, and although it was something new, he would much rather prefer the real thing. On the other hand, my 3 year old, well, it's more appropriate!

1.0 out of 5 stars from psyched to disappointed, January 30, 2002

I purchased this toy for my daughter (1 year). I also have a 2 1/2 year old and five year old , thinking they would all get a kick out of it. None of them did ! It seemed like a great idea, something different. Unfortunately they had to press quite hard on the "screen" to get the music to play and the shapes that are provided don't do anything but make a trail in the "paint" ,they don't create a shape. You have to push the bar back and forth alot to get the screen cleared, and you have to do it for them, well ,at least the two younger ones. Another problem is the easel. When you press on the screen to play it falls down, it needs to be more angled to withstand any pressure. I am actually returning it to where I purchased it, I kept my receipt and box because I wasn't sure if it would be good. I am so glad I did ! I am sick of having heaps of plastic in the house that don't live up to expectations and are not fun for the kids. Most importantly though ,is not only was I disappointed but their (kids)interest was not peaked by this toy and it mostly sat in the corner.

This is one of the worst toys I have ever purchased. I must admit I thought it looked interesting in the photo but you have to press very hard to make anything appear and then the roller bar doesn't clear the screen in less than 5 swipes. My 9 month old and two year old are totally bored with this toy. I do not recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stand does not work, May 5, 2003

I thought this would be a really cute toy for our one year old, however, she can't play with it for more than 5 minutes without it collapsing. The stand does not hold at all, even when "locked" into place. Forget about our 2 1/2 year old playing with her, as soon as he tries to use one of the little shapes and presses it against the toy, it collapses. I thought it would be one of our daughter's favorite 1st birthday presents, but it was a huge bust........

I was excited to get this toy for my 6 month old last christmas. He was not too interested in it and neither was my 2 year old. It's hard to make an impression - I had trouble with it so you can imagine my kids.

I put it away until recently - hoping my now 1year old would enjoy it. NOPE! My older son tries to step on it to make an impression of his foot and guess what - that does not work either.

Don't waste your money!

2.0 out of 5 stars A great idea .... in theory, March 17, 2002

What a great idea! A toy that babies can get creative with and not get messy! If only it worked ...

The surface is blue "goop" but enclosed in a strong plastic film so as you "fingerpaint" on the "goop" you aren't getting any on your fingers. As the the "goop" is moved aside by your fingers bright colours are revealed behind to make your work of art even more colourful. There are stampers as well to make shapes. To clear the screen you simply move the bar up and down (like a Magna Doodle) and start over. And to make it even more fun when you press down on the screen music plays. There is a stand as well - making it easy for sitting babies to draw.

Unfortunately the toy did not live up to our expectations. You must press quite firmly on the "goop" screen to make an a good impression and to get the music to play. My daughter was never able to press hard enough to make the music work. And when any sort of pressure was applied the stand would collapse. The stampers just kind of make a blob in the "goop" and not a nice clear image as you would expect. To clear the screen you must move the bar up and down at least 5 - 10 times to make a clear surface. My daughter had no interest in it at all.

This toy is disappointing and I wouldn't recommend it. Try a Magna Doodle when your baby is a bit older - now that is a great creative toy that works!

My 1 year old received this for her birthday and all my kids play with it (1 yr, 2 yr, 8 yr). Even I like to push my fingers into the non-gooey goo! I recommend leaving it flat for a 1 year old though. When it is elevated, she rolls the roller and pinches her finger.
