5.0 out of 5 stars Great Toy
The Diego Field Journal is a great durable toy for toddlers and up.
My daughter loves the cartridges and sounds and she can put them in all by herself. This is also a great toy to carry along somewhere. We recently took it with us to the doctor's office and it kept her attention the whole time we waited. She enjoys carrying it around with her. She has learned...

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed
Based on the description and price of this toy I expected more for my buck. The button on the left of the journal says which animal is in trouble. The button on the right makes the animal sound. I've yet to have it give me any animal facts. Also I cannot select which animal I want to hear about. The toys runs through the animals in the order they appear on the card...

She has learned the names of many new animals and is growing in her drawing abilities, strengthening those little fingers. As a talking toy, not too loud like some toys can be. Great Toy !

Based on the description and price of this toy I expected more for my buck. The button on the left of the journal says which animal is in trouble. The button on the right makes the animal sound. I've yet to have it give me any animal facts. Also I cannot select which animal I want to hear about. The toys runs through the animals in the order they appear on the card. And finally, the string for the stylus (so the average 4 year old doesn't lose it in 5.9 seconds) is so short, it barely reaches across to the left side of the Doodle Pad screen. And since I and my son are both left handed, this makes it even more difficult for us to use.

I do like that the toys seems to be quite durable so far. The animal cards are stored inside the toy, which makes it nice because it can easily and quickly be taken along for a car trip. There are 24 animals available for "rescue" and the learning curve on this toy is minimal.

The only reasons I gave this 3 stars instead of 2 is that my son does seem to like it so far and it holds his attention for longer than 5 seconds.

My 4-year old asked only for this from Santa, though I'm sure she was expecting more like what Diego really uses on the show. I think she was rather disappointed since it is really just another Magna Doodle (which we have several of) that makes sounds of animals we've never heard of (that at least is in keeping with the show!). Our 3 year old has played with it more, but it hasn't been touched in awhile now & it's only 2.5 weeks after Christmas. For what it cost and the difficulty we had in finding it, I was expecting much more.

My daughter LOVES this toy, it's the only reason I'm giving it 3 stars. There is no volume control it's only volume is LOUD. The latch is difficult for my 3 year old's hands. The string on the pen is too short to write left-handed, I understand about safety, if only we could move the pen to the other side... Also, the traceable figures are really small and the pen tip doesn't fit right. But, as I said, my daughter LOVES it and doesn't notice the stuff I hate about it.

We have had quit a few loud drops and she even carrys it around by the pen if its hanging out once the lid is shut and the pen is still attatched very durable! my two year old is even learing! the other day she said to my husband while looking at one of the disk's thats a puma !!! When my daughter opened this present at her birthday party she was so excited that she did not want to open any of her other presents. Now that the "newness" has worn off it is just another prop when she is playing rescue mission. I wish that the toy would be more interactive. You push the button and it makes an animal sound and you are suppose to color in the stencil (the board is like a magna doodle)that corresponds with that animal. The toy doesn't know if you colored in the right animal or not, you can push the button again and it will make another animal sound for you to find. I think it could have been better made.

diego field journal -
toy is cheap, and really not entertaining, my four year old had fun carrying the case around but that is all.
the pen does not fit in the stencils, and the sound is worthless.

there have got to be better diego toys out there

3.0 out of 5 stars An ok toy but not something I'd recommend for younger kids, January 19, 2009

I wish we would have just bought by son a Doodle-pro instead. My 2 1/2 yr old takes out all of the cards, which end up all over the house, and just likes to draw on the screen without the cards in it. The cord on the pencil is very short and that makes it difficult to trace the animals. The size of the stencils is so small that even when you do trace them, when you take the card out to see them on the screen, they are so small and disjointed that you can't tell what they are. The "talking" part is very limited and I think he's bored with this already.
