This set works well with the new Thomas trains, but the pre-2014 trains get stuck going up the hill. You'll notice that the hill has structural support midway up the hill where two pieces of track meet. Unfortunately, the track is not supported near the top of the hill where the straight track meets the piece attached to the top of the hill; the piece at the top of the hill is attached to the tower structure but the tower structure does not support the track pieces directly adjacent to the top piece. We've owned two sets and both sets have had the same issue; the track dips under the weight of the trains as they travel up the hill and the older trains get stuck in the dip.

Fisher-Price should, at a minimum, include a piece to hold the track together near the top of the hill to prevent trains from getting stuck. For instance, the Risky Rails Bridge Drop set includes pieces to hold the track together to prevent the "floating" track from dipping. Unfortunately due to the new track design, the Risky Rails Bridge Drop piece is not compatible with the new track.

If you're new to the Trackmaster series and haven't purchased the older trains, then this is a nice set. If you've previously invested in the older trains and you want to add this to your collection, then your enjoyment of this set maybe limited to watching the trains travel up the spiral and down the hill.

I like the new design on the ends of the tracks and how they snap together better, and I am appreciative that there are short connector pieces that connect old and new track, but I do not like this set as a whole.

The track dips at the top of the hill and our trains get stuck, the track will not attach very well to the support towers and after about two weeks of having it set up we're ready to get rid of it.

At first, it took a little while to set up the towers. The instructions are confusing. Use the picture on the box to help you figure it out.

The two brown towers in the picture are not holding the track in place (there are longer spots on the sides of the track which are supposed to snap into the support towers) and we can't get the spiral to set up like it's supposed to be.

I have an 8 year old train enthusiast who is very upset he spent his birthday money on the set at Toys R Us.

We have accumulated several pieces of Thomas Trackmaster over the last 3 years for my 6 year old son & 3 year old daughter. I found set up to be complicated but not terribly, it took me about 15 minutes. The set works well with the new engine we got with the Water Tower starter set, but not with the old engines. My issues with this have to do with the redesigned pieces.
1. The connectors between the tracks have been redesigned to be "stronger" and more "realistic". I HATE these. They definitely are stronger. In fact, they're so strong that my kids can't take them apart to redesign the track and you have to use the two special connecting pieces to connect it to the old style track. I can already see white stress places on the plastic where we pull them apart and put them together and we've only had it out of the box for 3 hours.
2. The redesigned "motorized" Thomas that comes with the water tower starter track works very well with the sodor spiral expansion track (in fact he goes really smoothly over that dip in the floating track that other reviewers have mentioned) but he does not work well with the old accessories. He gets stuck on the old "stop track" piece, whether the lever is set to stop or go.
3. The redesigned "stop track piece" that comes with the water tower starter set does not stop any of the old engines. It doesn't matter whether is is set to stop or go, all the old engines blow right over it.

If this is your first Thomas Trackmaster set and your kids are happy just running the train (rather than building new and elaborate track layouts) you may be satisfied with it. But make sure you are buying the redesigned engines. We'll be keeping it, because my son really wanted a water tower and the spiral for Thomas, but I'm very disappointed that they needed to take a system that functioned well for preschoolers through elementary school age and make it more difficult and less expandable.

This is a must have for the new Thomas sets. It was fairly easy to set up and it's loads of fun for the kids to play with. Despite it only having one real way to set it up, you can combine it with Gordon's hill to make some super fun large hill track layouts that will blow your kids mind. This is not something the kids are gonna be able to set up by themselves if they are 5 and under.

This track is great and feels solid when fully set-up. The new trains make quick work of the hill and even many of the old trains can get up this steep climb. They work better going up the other way as well but can get off track as they scream towards the bottom of the hill.

The one issue I have with this is that the long curved pieces are unique. If you lose one you are hosed and will have some trouble getting a new one. Ideally once this is set up, you won't want to take it down although your kid will.

This is a great track piece.

Pro's: Great setting, solid design, works with several older trains.
Con's: Curved pieces aren't easily replaced. Not an easy set up.
