***UPDATE*** See Fisher Price's website. Many negative reviews for this product right at their webstore. Lots of unhappy parents and children this Christmas, because of this item. Very poor quality control, apparently.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. I saw the commercial for this player, got online, and read about it. It looked like/sounded like the perfect solution...

I bought this product at Walmart as a gift for my 7 year old son who has special needs. He loves DVD's but he also loves pushing the buttons and making things happen. I introduced this to him last week before making an 8 hour road trip for the holiday weekend. It was perfect! The buttons are big and he learned what they do very quickly. He's dropped it and tossed it a few times already. The worse thing that has happened is that the DVD came dislodged. The thing looks like we've had it for a long time already because he is very rough with toys, but it has held up wonderfully! I'm thrilled and highly recommend it to anyone who's child likes to be in control of his dvd player.

Two quick things that I don't like for my situation, I wish the door could lock so he couldn't get it open. I am using a small piece of tape to keep him from getting it opened and from scratching the dvds. And it takes a little longer for the dvd to start playing. Children (and parents) will have to learn a little patience. Otherwise, AWESOME!

My daughter loves this DVD player. I bought it for a long flight (5 hours and vacation). It can withstand a lot of tough play and falls. It didn't skip or become disrupted at all. I wish the screen was a bit bigger but it is easy to use and she managed to learn which buttons to press on her own. The battery life was good for a couple of hours of continuous viewing. It has a stand that props it up if the kids don't want to hold it. I would recommend it even though it is pricey.

Even though I wasnt sure I wanted to spend $180+ on a "toy" for my 2 year old, I went ahead and purchased it from ToysRus. After only having this player for a few hours I can safely and proudly say that this was the BEST money I have spent in a long time. I LOVE the durability and ease of this item. My 2 yr old is ADHD and shopping with him is usually unbearable. Any trip to the grocery store longer than 15 minutes is pure torture...and the mall? forget it! BUT.. now.. I am certain that shopping will be fun again for BOTH of us. It keeps his focus and I dont have to worry about him dropping it 1,400 times!!
Thank you fisher price!!! :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Hanging Tough For Toddlers, October 23, 2008

Fisher Price has done it again and they have released another great kid-tough product. This year they have released a DVD player that will be able to handle a royal beating from your toddler. As a personal fan of their kid-tough camera, I was excited to see how the new DVD Player worked.

This DVD player is built from sturdy heavy-duty materials that can handle plenty of abuse. Each unit comes with a rechargeable battery & charger, which holds a charge for about two hours.

The screen size is 3.2' and has a color LCD screen on it with simple controls that make it easy for children to use. It also has a handle where kids can tote or hold the unit while they watch their movies or you can use the kickstand legs on the unit for hands-free viewing.

Not included with this player is a video out cable for the television, but if purchased, your child can watch their movies through their own DVD player on the regular television.

The main issue with it, as a parent of a destructive toddler, is that your child can take their own movies in and out and a parent safety latch would be great for keeping the movie in there, but still allowing your child the "controls" of stopping and starting their own shows. Because of this reason, it makes it a toy that requires more parental supervision to insure that we don't ruin our precious Dora movies that would be played on it.

The screen size is small, but understandably so in order to make this portable for little hands. This toy has a steeper price tag, but would work great for a family that doesn't want to make an investment in a DVD unit for the car, but wants to be able to take their child's entertainment on the road.

Of course, my parents used to have us entertain ourselves and we laughingly referred to our car as the "blue prison" on our treks to visit the family in Florida. Perhaps something like this would have saved my parents from yelling at us so much.

My son LOVES his new DVD player. Now he can take Lightning McQueen wherever he goes. My biggest complaint is that there is no "hold" feature. My son just turned 2 and still likes to push buttons. It would be nice if I was able to lock it so that the buttons don't function while the movie is playing. I realize this toy is recommended for 3 and up but I still feel it would be a nice feature.

I recently purchased this on Ebay for my 2 year old. We love it! I load the dvd for him and he does the rest. He loves pushing the buttons and carrying the little dvd player around with him. The screen is small, but the resolution is so great that it doesn't really matter. The player auto corrects itself when it detects a scratch on the dvd. You can jostle the player around and even drop it on a couch or bed and it won't even skip. We bought the "on the go kit" separate and it has everything we need to go on a trip. It includes the car adapter, ac adapter, ear phones, ear phone splitter, and rca cables. I had thought about buying a different player, that had a bigger screen and was less expensive, but now I am really happy to have spent [...] on this toddler friendly dvd player. I think this will hold up to years of little hands.

It looked like/sounded like the perfect solution for parents of preschoolers. We thought this player would be perfect for our 3-year-old to take on the road and watch her DVDs in the car, or to watch in any room of the house, including right beside us, as we watched something else on TV, and being able to withstand a fall down the stairs and keep on playing was an awesome feature. At the time that I was shopping for this item, it was a HTF hot Christmas item, and it was virtually soldout everywhere. I paid top dollar for this POS, the matching travel case, and also got the on-the-go kit, which includes kid's headphones, headphone jack splitter, car charger, and RCA cable for the TV. We were excited to give this to our daughter, and she was excited about having her own DVD player that she could take anywhere. We charged it for 8 hrs. as per the instructions, but the LED that indicates charging shut off before 8 hrs. We then plugged in the RCA cable to the TV, popped in one of her favorite DVDs, and it didn't even get through that first DVD before it spontaneously shut itself off, and restarted the DVD from the beginning. We shut it off and restarted it multiple times, and the malfunctions just got worse. The screen went black, even though the picture appeared on the TV. It kept shutting itself off and restarting itself, and then, it just wouldn't play. That was the first DVD that we tried to play! We tried other DVDs, and it's still a POS. Those same DVDs play fine in our other DVD players and laptops. When I got back online, I found that there were multiple identical complaints about the Fisher Price DVD player at another webstore. I plan to call Fisher Price, but don't have high hopes for a remedy, as other parents stated that they contacted Fisher Price and the customer service (or lack thereof) was horrible, and Fisher Price already seems to know that these players are junk. Even if I can get a refund for this piece of garbage, given the other similar complaints that I've read, it doesn't seem wise at all to exchange it for another POS. Some parents were on their 3rd Fisher Price DVD player before finally turning it in for a refund! JUST DON'T BUY THIS, and you'll save yourself a lot of money and frustration. IT DOESN'T WORK. Or may fool you by working very briefly before malfunctioning, or no longer holding/accepting a charge.

***** FINAL UPDATE ***** We did receive a replacement player from Fisher Price 2 months after Christmas 2008 after mailing them the defective player using a prepaid shipping label provided by them (call the 800# on the package). The replacement player (refurbished by the looks of the scuff marks) does work, though still "locks up" occasionally, causing my daughter to have to shut the player off & on again, restart the movie, and find her spot again -- she hates that so much that even though it doesn't occur every time she uses it, she uses it infrequently. Battery life is 2 hrs. at most. And if charged, but not used frequently, you'll find that the charge has drained out of it, so you need to plug it in to watch anything or you need the 12-volt adapter for the car. We did buy a Lenmar universal external DVD player battery with 5 adapter cables/plugs for a plane trip (this may double your battery life). None of the adapters fit the Tough Player perfectly, but one fits well enough to work. However, that all adds bulk and extra cables, making use of the player and it's portability more cumbersome. The screen's resolution is great, but my daughter complains that it's too small. The player lags for about a second b4 responding to button presses, causing my impatient 4-year-old to push buttons repeatedly, which sometimes results in a "frozen screen," requiring a restart. Unfortunately, has become an expensive, little-used, "bright, shiny" thing. She has watched more movies on DH's Ipod Touch 2G in the car than the Tough Player. Final rating: not worth the $$$ or the aggravation.

I was so disappointed in this product. I bought it because I thought it would be indestructable for my son as advertised. Within days of my son opening it from Christmas, it was already broken and we hadn't even dropped it yet (like the commercial). I have already returned the item to amazon. Don't waste your money.

I bought the player for my grandson. The screen is too small and the buttons
to skip or fast forward is confusing. I wanted a durable player and it is
durable but that is about all. The screen is not that clear.

We made this purchase thinking that this would be a great travel item for our 2 1/2yr old son. He opened it on Christmas and immediately loved it! We played several DVD's in it over the next few days and then suddenly, it wouldn't read any DVD's at all, even known good ones. The advertisement states that it is durable and kid tough and will survive drop after drop. We are pretty certain that this item was not dropped or mishandled since we were supervising our son when he was watching it. We are pretty disappointed and a little frustrated that after spending $150.00 plus shipping/handling we now have essentially a five pound paper weight!
